Citation Dr. Henry Taube
Dr. Henry Taube received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1983. His Nobel Citation reads "for his studies of the mechanisms of election transfer reactions particularly of metal complexes." It was said that his work "dominated the development of his subject both theoretically and experimentally, making 18 major discoveries." Dr. Taube was born in Neudorf, Saskatchewan and received his B.Sc. (1935) and his M.Sc. (1937) from the University of Saskatchewan. In 1940 he completed his Ph.D. at the University of California (Berkeley).
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Taube said, "But the benefits of science are not to be reckoned only in terms of the physical. Science as an intellectual exercise enriches our culture and is in itself ennobling. Each new insight into how the atoms in their interactions express themselves in structure and transformations, not only of inanimate matter, but particularly also of living matter, provides a thrill."

Henry Taube
American chemist who in 1983 won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his extensive research into the properties and reactions of dissolved inorganic substances, particularly oxidation-reduction processes involving the ions of metallic elements.
Taube was educated at the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon and the University of California, Berkeley. He taught at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and at the University of Chicago before joining the faculty of Stanford (Calif.) University in 1961. He became a U.S. citizen in 1942. In the late 1940s Taube carried out experiments with isotopes to show that in water solution the ions of metals form chemical bonds with several molecules of water and that the stability and geometric arrangement of the resulting hydrates, or coordination compounds, vary widely, depending on the identity and oxidation state of the ion. He also helped develop other techniques for studying such substances, and he devised an interpretation of their properties in terms of their electronic configurations. Analogous coordination compounds form in the presence of ammonia, chloride ion, or numerous other chemical species, which are called ligands when they engage in these reactions.

Stanford Report, October 3, 2001 Henry Taube Henry Taube, the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus; at Stanford 1962-present. Awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in chemistry "for his work on the mechanisms of electron transfer reactions, especially in metal complexes." After receiving the prize, he continued lecturing for a few years, noting "considerable improvement in the attentiveness of my students, though little in the message or the way it was transmitted had changed." He still contributes information for Stanford's introductory seminars but discontinued his research in August of this year. He continues to engage in professional activities, such as reviewing papers and consulting, but his major focus, he says, is "enjoying life."

Taube, Henry
Henry Taube, 1983 UPI/Corbis-Bettmann (b. Nov. 30, 1915, Neudorf, Sask., Can.), Canadian-born American chemist who in 1983 won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his extensive research into the properties and reactions of dissolved inorganic substances, particularly oxidation-reduction processes involving the ions of metallic elements. The oxidation or reduction of one metal ion by another involves their exchange of one or more electrons. Many such reactions occur rapidly in aqueous solution despite the fact that the stable shells of water molecules or other ligands should keep the two ions from getting close enough for electron exchange to occur directly. Taube showed that, in an intermediate stage of the reaction, a chemical bond must form between one of the ions and a ligand that is still bonded to the other. This ligand acts as a temporary bridge between the two ions, and its bond to the original ion can later break in such a way as to effectindirectlythe electron transfer that completes the reaction. Taube's findings have been applied in selecting metallic compounds for use as catalysts, pigments, and superconductors and in understanding the function of metal ions as constituents of certain enzymes.

Dr. Henry Taube Dr. Henry Taube received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1983. His Nobel Citation reads "for his studies of the mechanisms of electron transfer reactions particularly of metal complexes." It was said that his work "dominated the development of his subject both theoretically and experimentally, making 18 major discoveries." Dr.
