contents: background key ideas conclusion bibliography ... how to cite this article Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) , Asia’s first Nobel Laureate, was born into a prominent Calcutta family known for its socio-religious and cultural innovations during the 19th Bengal Renaissance. The profound social and cultural involvement of his family would later play a strong role in the formulation of Rabindranath’s educational priorities. His grandfather Dwarkanath was involved in supporting medical facilities, educational institutions and the arts, and he fought for religious and social reform and the establishment of a free press. His father was also a leader in social and religious reform, who encouraged a multi-cultural exchange in the family mansion Jorasanko. Within the joint family, Rabindranath’s thirteen brothers and sisters were mathematicians, journalists, novelists, musicians, artists. His cousins, who shared the family mansion, were leaders in theatre, science and a new art movement. The tremendous excitement and cultural richness of his extended family permitted young Rabindranath to absorb and learn subconsciously at his own pace, giving him a dynamic open model of education, which he later tried to recreate in his school at Santiniketan. Not surprisingly, he found his outside formal schooling to be inferior and boring and, after a brief exposure to several schools, he refused to attend school. The only degrees he ever received were honorary ones bestowed late in life.

Tagore, Rabindranath (Rabindranath Thakur, Calcuta, 1861-Santiniketan, 1941) Escritor indio.

Poems and songs by rabindranath tagore, the Nobel Laureate from India.
http://www.geocities.com/n-halder/poem.htm
The works of Rabindranath Tagore run to 29 large volumes. They contain some 60 collections of verse. Tagore also wrote over 2,000 songs, which have become the national music of Bengal, and include the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.
Moreover, he wrote in Bengali and translations of his work are quite rare. It is a daunting task to find good translations of his work. I have selected the following poems quite randomly, because I liked reading them over and over again. I am sure there are many others equally good and even better which I have missed.

It is basically as a poet that he gained fame all over the world. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913, the first Asian writer to have been awarded this distinction. Rabindranath's achievement as a writer can only be viewed correctly in the context of his whole life since his philosophy and his poetics changed as he moved from one phase of his life to another. Through constant study and ceaseless experimentation he mastered the transformations that had taken place in world literature, culture, civilization, philosophy and knowledge over the ages. Consequently, one can trace the content and form of his art evolving ceaselessly. The result can be seen in his countless poems, songs, short stories, novels, essays, plays, musical dramas, dance drama s, travel narratives, letters, and the innumerable speeches that he delivered at home and abroad. Nevertheless, Rabindranath's philosophy of life itself lay on solid foundations that were built on his own ideas despite his openness to changes coming from the outside world. Remarkably, his creativity always tended to flow into ever-new channels. He was a poet not only of his age but also for all ages. Certainly, his genius was a transcendent one. His arrival in Bangla literature heralded a new era. Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 (25 Baishakh, 1268 in the Bangla Calendar) into the affluent and culturally rich Tagore family of Kolkata's Jorasanko. His grandfather was Prince

RABINDRANATH TAGORE Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861 or the 25th day of the month of Baisakh in the year 1268 (Bengali lunar calendar) in Calcutta, in a cultured and wealthy family. The poet's early life was spent in an atmosphere of religion and arts, literature, music and painting. In 1901 he founded the school, Santiniketan, at Bolpur in Birbhum. The school was a great success and gave birth to Viswabharati. It became a great seat of culture and learning. In 1913 he received the Nobel Prize for literature following the publication of his collection of poems Gitanjali. Rabindranath Tagore's contribution to Bengali language and literature is unparallel. He wrote many novels, short stories, plays and poems. Some of Tagore's novels include Bauthakuranir Hat, Rajarshi, Naukadubi, Chokher-Bali, Gora and Ghare Baire. Tagore was an ardent patriot. His most intense period of political activity was in the years following 1905, when the agitation against the partition of Bengal was at its highest. He renounced his knighthood in 1919 as a protest against the Amritsar massacre. His patriotic poems and songs, India's national anthem Jana Gana Mana have passed into the common heritage of his country.
