Synge, Richard Laurence Millington British biochemist who improved paper chromatography (a means of separating mixtures) to the point where individual amino acids could be identified. He developed the technique, known as partition chromatography, with his colleague Archer Martin 1944. They shared the 1952 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Synge was born in Liverpool and studied at Cambridge. From 1967 until his retirement in 1974 he worked as a biochemist at the Food Research Institute of the Agricultural Research Council in Norwich. Martin and Synge worked together at Cambridge and at the Wool Industries Research Association in Leeds. Their chromatographic method became an immediate success, widely adopted. It was soon demonstrated that not only the type but the concentration of each amino acid can be determined.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Richard Laurence Millington Synge The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1952 Richard Laurence Millington Synge was born in Liverpool on October 28, 1914, as the son of Laurence Millington Synge, of Liverpool Stock Exchange , and Katharine Charlotte Swan. In 1928 he went to Winchester College, and in 1933 he entered Trinity College. He obtained his Ph.D. degree at Cambridge in 1941. The circumstances of his work up to 1945, including the collaborative work on partition chromatography and related topics, are described in the Nobel Lectures by A. J. P. Martin and himself. They gave the first demonstration of partition chromatography to the Biochemical Society at its meeting at the National Institute for Medical Research, London, on June 7, 1941. Since 1945 Dr. Synge has been mainly interested in analytical problems concerning the larger peptide molecules, as antibiotics and as intermediates in protein metabolism. From 1942 to 1948 he worked almost exclusively with the antibiotic peptides of the gramicidin group. In 1946-1947 he spent eight months with Professor Tiselius at Uppsala, studying the application of his absorption methods to these compounds. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1952 together with Archer John Porter Martin " for their invention of partition chromatography".

The origin of the name "Synge" is described in the introduction to General relativity : papers in honour of J L Synge The name Synge is said to have originated with Henry VIII, who commanded a favourite choirboy to "Synge, Millington, synge". John Synge's mother, Ellen Price, was of Scottish origin, being descended from the Scottish Stuarts, in particular a Sir William Stuart who went to Ireland in the early seventeenth century. After being educated at St Andrews College in Dublin, Synge entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1915. There his achievements were quite remarkable, winning a Foundation Scholarship at the end of his first year. This scholarship was normally won by students in their third year of study. He was awarded his M.A. in 1919 in Mathematics and Experimental Physics. He received the Large Gold Medal for his outstanding work. After graduating, Synge was appointed to a lectureship in mathematics at Trinity College, but he only held the post for a short time, leaving for Canada in 1920. from 1920 to 1925 Synge was an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto. Then in 1925 he returned to Trinity College, Dublin where he was elected to a fellowship and also appointed to the chair of Natural Philosophy (the older name for Physics).

AUGUST 18 - BIRTHS Marvin Harris (source) Born 18 Aug 1927 U.S. anthropological historian and theoretician considered to be a generalist with an interest in the global processes that account for human origins and the evolution of human cultures. Due to his interests in cultural anthropology, Dr. Harris has assumed the role of an anthropological historian theoretician. His fieldwork with cultural materialism has taken him to the Islas de la Bahia, Brazil, Mozambique, Ecuador, India and East Harlem. Bern Dibner (source) Born 18 Aug 1897; died 6 Jan 1988 Ukrainian-American engineer and historian of science. Dibner worked as an engineer during the electrification of Cuba. Realizing the need for improved methods of connecting electrical conductors, in 1924, he founded the Burndy Engineering Company. A few years later, he became interested in the history of Renaissance science. Subsequently, he began collecting books and everything he could find that was related to the history of science. This became a second career as a scholar that would run parallel with his life as a businessman. Martin for their development of partition chromatography, notably paper chromatography. Some of chemistry's advances need new methods for separating various substances. In filter-paper chromatography, a drop of a mixture of substances is dropped on a strip of filter paper, which is allowed to draw up a suitable solvent (ex. butyl alcohol-water), by capillary action. The spot begins to move, then gradually segregates into several spots. Some spots rapidly follow the solvent, while others lag behind. The result is a resolution of the mixture into component parts. One drop of extremely complicated mixtures can be analyzed in this simple way. Dr. Jonas Edward Salk (source) Born 28 Oct 1914; died 23 Jun 1995. American Jewish physician and medical researcher, born in New York City, who developed the first safe and effective vaccine for poliomyelitis. His early work (1946) was research on the influenza virus. In 1963, he became director of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies at the Univ. of California, San Diego. He developed a vaccine against poliomyelitis by cultivating three strains of the virus separately in monkey tissue. The virus was separated from the tissue, stored for a week, killed with formaldehyde, then tested to make certain that it is dead. A series of three or four injections with the killed virus vaccine was required to confer immunity.
