Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1926 for his studies in the chemistry of colloids and for his invention of the ultracentrifuge, an invaluable aid in those and subsequent studies. After receiving his doctorate from the University of Uppsala in 1907, Svedberg joined the faculty there. When he retired in 1949 he was named director of the new Gustaf Werners Institute for Nuclear Chemistry, a post he held until 1967.

Theodor Svedberg postupnì studoval na škole v Köpingu, støední školu v Örebro a Gothengurgskou moderní školu (ukonèil ji v roce 1903). Od ledna 1904 studoval na univerzitì v Uppsale . V roce 1905 zde Svedberg získal bakaláøský titul a v roce 1908 doktorát filozofie. V roce 1905 pøijal Svedberg místo asistenta v Chemickém institutu v Uppsale. O dva roky pozdìji zaèal na uppsalské univerzitì pøednášet fyzikální chemii. V roce 1912 byl Theodor Svedberg zvolen profesorem fyzikální chemie na univerzitì v Uppsale. Pozdìji zde byl øeditelem Institutu jaderné chemie Gustava Wernera. Výzkum koloidù Svedberg se zamìøil pøedevším na zkoumání koloidù a makromolekulárních slouèenin. Ve své disertaèní práci Studien zur Lehre von den kolloiden Lösungen (1908) vysvìtlil nový zpùsob získávání koloidních èástic a podal jasné dùkazy platnosti Brownova pohybu (základ teorie položil Einstein a von Smoluchowski). Tím také dokázal existenci molekul. V další vìdecké práci se Theodor Svedberg vìnoval zkoumání fyzikálních vlastností koloidù (difùze, absorbce svìtla, sedimentace). Pro výzkumy sedimentace mu posloužila jím sestrojená ultracentrifuga , ve které lze zkoumat v roztoku obsažené velké molekuly (napø. bílkoviny, karbohydráty a složité polymery).

Svedberg, Theodor Swedish chemist. In 1924 he constructed the first ultracentrifuge, a machine that allowed the rapid separation of particles by mass. This can reveal the presence of contaminants in a sample of a new protein, or distinguish between various long-chain polymers. Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1926. Svedberg prepared a number of new organosols from more than 30 metals. Through an ultramicroscope, he studied the particles in these sols and confirmed Albert Einstein' s theories about Brownian movement. Svedberg discovered that thorium-X crystallizes with lead and barium salts (but not with others), anticipating English chemist Frederick Soddy' s demonstration of the existence of isotopes. Svedberg also investigated, about 1923, the chemistry involved in the formation of latent images in photographic emulsions. Working on synthetic polymers, Svedberg introduced electron microscopy to study natural and regenerated cellulose, X-ray diffraction techniques to investigate cellulose fibres, and electron diffraction to analyse colloidal micelles and crystallites.
