NOVEMBER 19 - BIRTHS Eileen Collins (source) Born 19 Nov 1956 Eileen Marie Collins is an American astronaut who was the first woman to pilot and, later, to command a U.S. space shuttle. After college she joined the Air Force, trained as a pilot to fly many different kinds of planes and eventually became an instructor pilot. She was selected in 1990 for the astronaut program while attending the Air Force Test Pilot School. Collins served as the first woman shuttle pilot on STS-63 (Feb 3-11, 1995). which included a rendezvous with the Russian Space Station Mir, and also STS-84 (May 15-24, 1997). On her third space shuttle flight, STS-93 (Jul 22-27, 1999), which deployed the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, she became the first woman space shuttle commander. Overall she has logged over 537 hours in space. Yuri Valentinovich Knorozov (source) Born 19 Nov 1922; died 31 Mar 1999 Russian linguist, epigraphist , and ethnologist who played a major role in the decipherment of Mayan hieroglyphic writing . Remarkably, though not permitted to leave the Soviet Union during the post-war decades he focused on the Mayan language, Knorozov still managed to decipher the phonetic code of the pre-Columbian society on the Mexican peninsula. Others before him had tried to "read" Maya glyphs without success, because they tried to interpret them in terms of an alphabet. Knorozov instead advocated phoneticisms. He realized that the purported alphabet represented a part of the Maya syllabary, and then identified many of the syllabic marks, or glyphs, found on the many Mayan tombs and monuments.

Artturi Ilmari Virtanen Pour ses recherches et inventions en chimie agricole et de nutrition, et spécialement pour sa méthode de conservation des fourrages. (Helsinki, 1895 - Helsinki, 1973) Le premier prix Nobel finlandais est né à Helsinki le 15 janvier 1895. Après avoir étudié la chimie à l'Université de sa ville natale, il obtient en 1918 le grade de docteur, ayant préparé sous la direction du professeur O. Aschan une thèse sur les acides résineux dans laquelle il établit la constitution de l'acide abiétique de la colophane du pin. Jugeant sa formation insuffisante, il étudie les techniques et les méthodes chimico-physiques et biochimiques à l'occasion de voyages "post-doc" en Suisse, en Allemagne et en Suède. En 1921, il accepte le poste de chef de laboratoire de l'organisation centrale des laiteries coopératives finnoises, la Valio (1). Virtanen est alors nommé maître de conférences à l'Université d'Helsinki (1924-1939); il enseigne également au cours de cette période (1931-1938) à l'Ecole Technique Supérieure d'Helsinki. Pédagogue original, il fait participer les étudiants les plus avancés aux travaux de recherche de l'Institut dont il assure la dierection Il occupe ensuite, de 1939 à 1948, la chaire de biochimie à l'Université d'Helsinki. Tenant de la recherche fondamentale, Virtanen n'a jamais perdu de vue qu'elle devait pouvoir déboucher sur des applications techniques, lors même qu'elle semble s'en éloigner. Evoquant son entrée à la Valio, où son travail porte sur les problèmes pratiques posés par l'industrie laitière (détermination des taux de matière grasse, dosage de l'eau, mesure du pH), il écrit :
