Stern, Otto O shtern] Pronunciation Key Stern, Otto , American physicist, b. Germany, Ph.D. Univ. of Breslau, 1912. After resigning from his post at the Univ. of Hamburg in 1933, he became professor of physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and later professor emeritus at the Univ. of California, Berkeley. Stern was an outstanding experimental physicist; his contributions included development of the molecular-beam method, discovery of space quantization (with Gerlach, 1922), measurement of atomic magnetic moments, demonstration of the wave nature of atoms and molecules, and discovery of the proton's magnetic moment. Stern, Otto German physicist who demonstrated by means of the Stern-Gerlach apparatus that elementary particles have wavelike properties as well as the properties of matter that had been demonstrated. Nobel Prize for Physics 1943.
Stern was born in Sohrau, Upper Silesia (now Zory in Poland), and studied at a number of German universities. He then worked with Albert Einstein
In 1920 Stern and Walther Gerlach (1899-1979) carried out their experiment, which consisted of passing a narrow beam of silver atoms through a strong magnetic field. Classical theory predicted that this field would cause the beam to broaden, but quantum theory predicted that the beam would split into two separate beams. The result, showing a split beam, was the first clear evidence for space quantization - the phenomenon that, in a magnetic field, certain atoms behave like tiny magnets which can only take up particular orientations with respect to the direction of the field. Stern went on to improve this molecular-beam technique and in 1931 was able to detect the wave nature of particles in the beams.
In 1933, Stern measured the magnetic moment of the proton and the deuteron, and demonstrated that the proton's magnetic moment was 2.5 times greater than expected.

Stern was born in Sorau, Germany (now Zary, Poland), and educated at the University of Breslau. He taught at Technische Hochschule in Zürich and at the universities of Frankfurt and Hamburg. In 1933 he moved to the U.S., accepting the position of research professor of physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pa. Stern developed a method of studying the magnetic moments of atoms ( see ATOM AND ATOMIC THEORY ), atomic nuclei, and protons by directing beams of atoms or molecules through magnetic fields. For this achievement he was awarded the 1943 Nobel Prize in physics.

Zde zùstal až do svého penzionování v roce 1945.
