Marie CURIE, Pierre CURIE, Henri BECQUEREL Pour que naisse le neutrino, il fallait que la radioactivite beta soit connue. C'est Henri Becquerel qui en 1896 fit les premieres experiences sur le phenomene de la radioactivite . Pierre et Marie Curie decouvrirent ensuite le radium, deux million de fois plus radioactif que les sels d'uranium utilises par Becquerel. Tous trois furent a l'origine des recherches fondamentales sur les noyaux atomiques, entreprisent dans les annees qui suivirent, et qui aboutirent, entre autres, a la decouverte du neutrino, 50 ans plus tard. Marie et Pierre Curie dans leur laboratoire James Chadwick En 1914, James Chadwick montre que le spectre en energie de l'electron provenant de la desintegration beta est continu. Ce probleme du spectre beta continu aboutira 16 ans plus tard a l'hypothese de Pauli et fera douter Niels Bohr sur le principe de conservation de l'energie. En 1932, Chadwick decouvre le neutron, compagnon du proton dans les noyaux atomiques. Par cette decouverte, il participe indirectement au bapteme du "neutrino" par Fermi et recoit le prix Nobel de physique. Wolfgang PAULI L'idee du neutrino est nee seulement en 1930, lorsque Wolfgang Pauli tenta une operation de sauvetage desesperee du "principe de conservation de l'energie". Il inventa pour expliquer le spectre continu de la desintegration beta une nouvelle particule legere, neutre et interagissant peu avec les autres particules de la matiere.

Er wird in zwei Vorträgen zur Elementarteilchenphysik und über atomare Abrüstung sprechen. Prof. Jack Steinberger gehört zu den Mitentdeckern eines Elementarteilchens, des neuartigen Müon-Neutrinos. Steinberger und zwei weitere amerikanische Physiker erhielten 1988 für diese Entdeckung den Nobelpreis. Die geheimnisvollen Neutrinos sind Elementarteilchen mit sehr geringer Masse, die in der Entwicklung und Struktur des Weltalls eine vermutlich entscheidende Rolle spielen. Über die "History of Neutrinos" spricht Prof. Jack Steinberger in einem Sonderkolloquium am Sonntag, dem 9.Mai 1999 um 16.00 Uhr im Institut für Physik der TU Ilmenau.
