Steinberger, Jack Americký fyzik a spoludržitel Nobelovy ceny za fyziku pro rok 1988, kterou dostal za objeveni mionového neutrina a dùkazu, že mionové neutrino je jen jedno z vìtší rodiny neutrin. Steinberger se dìlí o cenu s Leonem Maxem Ledermanem a Melvinem Schwartzem Steinberger studoval chemii na universitì v Chicagu. Jako èlen armády se stal zamìstnancem MIT (Massachusetts Intitute of Technology) Radiation Laboratory, kde ho zájem o fyziku definitivnì pohltil. V roce 1948, po návratu na Universitu v Chicagu, získal titul Ph.D. Dále se vzdìlával na Institutu pro další studia v Princetonu v New Jersey, na Kalifornské universitì v Berkeley a na Kolumbijské universitì. V roce 1968 se stal èlenem výzkumného týmu v komplexu laboratoøí CERN ve Švýcarsku, kde strávil zbytek své kariéry. Neutrina jsou mnohem menší než èástice v jádøe atomu - protony a neutrony. Je tìžké je izolovat a pozorovat, protože s hmotou interagují jen velmi, velmi málo. V šedesátých letech se podaøilo Ledermanovi, Schwartzovi a Steinbergerovi najít zpùsob, jak neutrina polapit. Za pomoci velkého urychlovaèe èástic v národní laboratoøi v Brookhavenu v New Yorku se jim podaøilo vytvoøit svazek vysoce energetických neutrin. Pomocí speciálního detektoru mohli neutrina studovat a dokonce prokázat, že existuje nejeden druh neutrina. Objev mionového neutrina podnítil zájem dalších fyzikù hledat další nové èástice.

During the summer and autumn of 1999, she was an undergraduate student and had a placement at CERN, i.e. The European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva. She has made this page presenting the stay in words and photos. The CERN site The Summer Student Stay During the summer and parts of the autumn 1999, after four years of physics studies at the technical university of Norway, I was a Summer Student at CERN . CERN is the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, or Laboratoire européen pour la physique des particules. This laboratory is situated on the border between France and Switzerland close to Geneva. The stay was in general cool. We were about 150 - 200 (?) students from Europe, the US, Russia and some other places. For five weeks, we attended a Lecture Programme on particle physics, Discussion Sessions, organized visits around CERN, Workshops, Student Sessions and Poster Sessions. We also worked on our individual projects. The stay had a maximum period of 13 weeks. The Lecture Programme During the Lecture Programme at CERN, outstanding scientists from CERN and around the world shared their knowledge with us. Even some Nobel Prize winners when we were lucky! The courses were mainly on particle physics, both theoretical and experimental, at a high level, and were offered to the students who felt able to follow them.
