Steinbeck, John Steinbeck, John, , American writer, b. Salinas, Calif., studied at Stanford. He is probably best remembered for his strong sociological novel The Grapes of Wrath, Cup of Gold The Pastures of Heaven (1932), and To a God Unknown Tortilla Flat (1935), an affectionate yet realistic novel about the lovable, exotic, Spanish-speaking poor of Monterey, was enthusiastically received. A compassionate understanding of the world's disinherited was to be Steinbeck's hallmark. The novel In Dubious Battle (1936) defends striking migrant agricultural workers in the California fields. In the novella Of Mice and Men The Moon Is Down (1942; later made into a play), about Norwegian resistance to the Nazis. The Grapes of Wrath (1939; Pulitzer Prize), while treating the plight of dispossessed Dust Bowl farmers during the 1930s, presents a universal picture of victims of disaster. Steinbeck's depiction of the westward migration of the Joad family, and their subsequent struggles in the exploitative agricultural industry of California, is realistic and moving, and he endows his humble characters with nobility. Steinbeck's other works are diverse, ranging from the literal account of a voyage, The Sea of Cortez (1941; written with the marine biologist E. F. Ricketts); to a parable

John Steinbeck
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
John Ernst Steinbeck February 27 December 20 ) was one of the most famous American novelists of the 20th century . He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in , though his popularity with readers never was matched by the literary critics. He was born in Salinas, California , which acted as a setting for many of his stories. His novels are called as California novels or dust bowl fiction, referring to the era of dustbowl in American plains. He had a wide range of interests like jazz, politics, philosophy, history, and myth. For many he was just a pseudo intellectual, for many others, the authentic voice of Great Depression
Steinbeck wrote in the naturalist/realist style, often about poor, working-class people. His most famous work, The Grapes of Wrath , tells the story of the Joads, a poor family from Oklahoma and their journey to and subsequent struggles in California . It is often understood as a novel in defense of the poor as against the rich. In , the book would be listed as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century as selected by the editorial board of the American Modern Library East of Eden is probably Steinbeck's most substantial work. In it Steinbeck stops looking towards social injustice as the source of evil, and instead explores the roots of evil in human psychology.

Steinbeck, John Of Mice and Men
Genre Play (98 pp.) Keywords Caregivers Disability Euthanasia Homicide ... Mental Retardation Summary George tries to take care of his mentally retarded friend, Lennie, whose mental disability makes it impossible for him to judge his powerful strength. Lennie means well and tried hard; he likes soft, furry things, like a mouse and a puppy, both of which he squeezes to death accidentally. Though his great strength is useful on the ranch where he works, his inability to govern his behavior leads him into an accidental homicide. George, not wanting Lennie to live the rest of his life in prison, shoots him in the head as an act of mercy. Commentary This play produced compassion both for the retarded Lennie and his caregiving friend. George becomes terribly frustrated because Lennie cannot learn. Lennie forgets what George has taught him, and, in spite of his best intentions, uses too much force. George shows that caregivers can be overwhelmed by the magnitude of their responsibilities and driven to act in ways they might not otherwise.

Biographical Sketch
Born in 1902, the third of four children, John Steinbeck was the only son of John Ernst and Olive Hamilton Steinbeck. Raised in the family home in Salinas, California, Steinbeck roamed the woods and explored Monterey Bay and the Big Sur. He was not a motivated student, but he knew from an early age that he wanted to write. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1919 and entered Stanford University, which he attended intermittently until 1925. He often took time off in order to earn money for the following term's tuition and took a variety of jobs including clerk, surveyor, and ranch hand. In 1923 Steinbeck took a class in marine biology which sparked a life long interest in the subject. He left Stanford in 1925 without graduating. Steinbeck began writing fiction in college and published a few pieces in the school paper. When he left school he decided New York was the place for an aspiring writer to be, so he took a job on a freighter and headed East. Less than a year later, discouraged by his lack of success, he returned to California on another steamer. He spent the next couple of years working as a handyman and caretaker at a Lake Tahoe estate and in February 1928 he finished his first novel

in dubious battle
1 October 2003 The title In Dubious Battle is from Milton's Paradise Lost ; it's how Satan characterizes his rebellion against God. The word "dubious" was double-edged even for Milton. It can mean "up for grabs," which is how Satan wants us to see it, or it can mean "fishy," the interpretation preferred by God's party. Depending on how you look at the bitter, bloody strike at the center of John Steinbeck's 1936 novel, either meaning fits. In Dubious Battle is an abstract rendering of themes that Steinbeck would personalize in Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath . Its characters go by single names, like epic heroes or fallen archangels. Protagonists Jim and Mac are sent from the City as emissaries of the Party to the migrant workers of the fictional Torgas Valley. Their motives are indeed dubious. Mac, the veteran, wants bloodshed, headlines, celebrity, and isn't averse to helping some of the strikers to martyr themselves. Jim wants to avenge his father, a lifelong down-and-outer – and, possibly, to annihilate himself. Mac and Jim find allies among the "fruit tramps": equally mythical heroes named Dakin and London, cautious planners prone to streaks of ill-tempered violence, leaders of men who are alternately respected and envied by the rabble. As they fight the growers, scabs, vigilantes, cops, and councilmen of the Valley, Mac comes to realize that the place is "organized like Italy." Nameless forces backed by limitless resources counter every move that the strikers make. Like the hapless
