Staudinger, Hermann German organic chemist, founder of macromolecular chemistry, who carried out pioneering research into the structure of albumen and cellulose. Nobel prize 1953. To measure the high molecular weights of polymers he devised a relationship, now known as Staudinger's law, between the viscosity of polymer solutions and their molecular weight. He devised a new and simple synthesis of isoprene (the monomer for the production of the synthetic rubber polyisoprene) in 1910. Most chemists thought that polymers were disorderly conglomerates of small molecules, but from 1926 Staudinger put forward the view that polymers are giant molecules held together with ordinary chemical bonds. To give credence to the theory, he made chemical changes to polymers that left their molecular weights almost unchanged; for example, he hydrogenated rubber to produce a saturated hydrocarbon polymer. In his book Macromolekulare Chemie und Biologie 1947, Staudinger anticipated the molecular biology of the future.

Staudinger, Hermann Il a laissé à la postérité plusieurs ouvrages célèbres et des centaines de publications originales, aidé dans son énorme tâche par sa femme, Magda Weit, docteur en philosophie et licenciée de sciences naturelles. Ces substances donnant dans un solvant des solutions colloïdales, on les considérait comme résultant d'associations moléculaires, à la façon dont sont formées les micelles de savon dans l'eau. La nature des forces de ces associations était peu connue, et on les qualifiait de secondaires par opposition aux liaisons covalentes qui assurent la stabilité des molécules simples. C'est à Staudinger que revient le mérite d'avoir démontré l'existence réelle des macromolécules et d'avoir relié leurs propriétés physico-chimiques à leur constitution. Comme toute science nouvelle, la chimie macromoléculaire fut accueillie avec un scepticisme quasiment général; d'abord combattue, elle fut progressivement reconnue et finalement admise. Le doute venait de ce que l'on ne croyait pas à l'existence de molécules à masse moléculaire de l'ordre de 5000. Avec un tel nombre d'atomes constituant une macromolécule, on devine que les possibilités de formation de substances nouvelles augmentent considérablement. Staudinger a bien été le créateur d'une chimie nouvelle. Il est devenu possible de calculer en biochimie le nombre de combinaisons isomères d'une protéine, que l'on peut obtenir par variation des unités constituantes (aminoacides). Prenons le cas d'une protéine de masse moléculaire 120 000, constituée de 20 restes d'aminoacides différents; cette protéine nécessite en tout 1000 restes d'aminoacides, soit un nombre d'isomères possibles égal à 10 1278! On imagine facilement le nombre de réactions et de structures possibles dans les phénomènes vitaux.
