Frederick Soddy , the son of Benjamin Soddy, a London merchant, was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England, on September 2, 1877. He was educated at Eastbourne College and the University College of Wales , Aberystwyth.
In 1895 he obtained a scholarship at Merton College, Oxford , from which University he graduated in 1898 with first class honours in chemistry. After two years of research at Oxford he went to Canada and from 1900 to 1902 was Demonstrator in the Chemistry Department of McGill University , Montreal. Here he worked with Professor Sir Ernest Rutherford on problems of radioactivity. Together they published a series of papers on radioactivity and concluded that it was a phenomenon involving atomic disintegration with the formation of new kinds of matter. They also investigated the gaseous emanation of radium.
Leaving Canada, Soddy then worked with Sir William Ramsay at University College, London

Soddy, Frederick
(b. Sept. 2, 1877, Eastbourne, Sussex, Eng.d. Sept. 22, 1956, Brighton, Sussex), English chemist who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1921 for investigating radioactive substances and for elaborating the theory of isotopes . He is credited, along with others, with the discovery of the element protactinium in 1917. Educated in Wales and at the University of Oxford, he worked under the physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford at McGill University, Montreal (1900-02), then under the chemist Sir William Ramsay at University College, London. After teaching in Scotland, he was professor of chemistry at Oxford (1919-36). Soddy did work with Rutherford on the disintegration of radioactive elements. He was among the first to conclude in 1912 that certain elements might exist in forms that differ in atomic weight while being indistinguishable and inseparable chemically. These, upon a suggestion by Margaret Todd, he called isotopes. In Science and Life (1920) he pointed out their value in determining geologic age.

English chemist who coined the word isotopes to indicate substances which were chemically identical but had different radioactive properties. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his discovery of isotopes He also published a note in Nature containing the mathematical formulas describing Soddy circles

Soddy, Frederick English physical chemist who pioneered research into atomic disintegration and coined the term isotope. He was awarded a Nobel prize 1921 for investigating the origin and nature of isotopes.
The displacement law, introduced by Soddy in 1913, explains the changes in atomic mass and atomic number for all the radioactive intermediates in the decay processes.
After his chemical discoveries, Soddy spent some 40 years developing a theory of 'energy economics', which he called 'Cartesian economics'. He argued for the abolition of debt and compound interest, the nationalization of credit, and a new theory of value based on the quantity of energy contained in a thing.
Soddy was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, and studied at Oxford. He worked 1900-02 with physicist Ernest Rutherford
Soddy and Rutherford postulated that radioactive decay is an atomic or subatomic process, and formulated a disintegration law. They also predicted that helium should be a decay product of radium, a fact that Soddy proved spectrographically in 1903.
His works include Chemistry of the Radio-Elements 1912-14, The Interpretation of the Atom 1932, and The Story of Atomic Energy 1949.
