Snell, fant de at antigen 2 tilhørte et komplekst system av "sterke" vevstyper hos mus, som ble kalt H-2-komplekset. Hud transplantert mellom mus som hadde forskjellige H-2-vevstyper resulterte i en særlig rask og sterk avstøtningsreaksjon. En vevstype hos mennesket ble først funnet av den franske immunologen Jean Dausset i 1958. Senere fant man at menneskets vevstyper tilhørte et system som var minst like komplekst og sterkt som H-2 hos mus, det ble kalt HLA-komplekset. George D. Snell og Jean Dausset (sammen med Baruch Benacerraf) fikk nobelprisen i medisin i 1980. Peter A. Gorer døde dessverre før hans pionerarbeid ble tilstrekkelig anerkjent.

An independent institution, the Lab has maintained a consistent scientific reputation both as a supplier of inbred strains of mice for genetic and biomedical research and for the scientific achievements of its researchers. Conducted by Susan Mehrtens in 1986, the Oral History Collection includes transcripts of extensive interviews with fifty scientists, administrators, and staff members of the Jackson Laboratory.
