James Hamilton O'Donnell FRACI 1934-1995 Jim O'Donnell was one of the founders of the UQ Chemistry Polymer Materials and Radiation Group. He passed away in 1995. His many achievements were acknowledged in this obituary written by Dave Hill and Peter Pomery and published in Chemistry in Australia in 1995. "The premature death of Professor Jim O'Donnell in May of this year has for many people left a large permanent emptiness in their personal and professional lives. Jim was a man of high intellect, great humility and compassion but with an overwhelming enthusiasm and passion for chemistry. He had enormous energy and commitment and a vision for establishing Australian chemistry in the international chemical community. He not only achieved this in his own field of polymer chemistry but was internationally recognised in the wider aspects of the discipline. In the mid 1970s the Polymer Materials and Radiation Group was formed at the University of Queensland between Jim and ourselves, this in many ways shaping all of our lives from that point. Whilst Jim set the initial goals of the Group - to become an internationally recognised centre for polymer research the philosophy was based on active co-operation, discussion and, importantly, constructive criticism amongst us all. As the Group became more established Jim revealed yet more aspects of his multi-faceted vision for chemistry. In the area of chemical education, he became chairman of the RACI (Qld) Chem Ed Group in 1980, his initiatives in Queensland including the Qld Schools Lecture (now The O'Donnell Schools Lecture), The Titration Competition and later The Australian National Chemical Analysis Competition and the Annual Secondary/Tertiary Interface Symposia between teachers and academics. Jim set his goals higher in 1981 initiating National Chemistry week, which included The National Chemistry Quiz, Poster and Photographic Competitions. He delivered the schools lecture in NSW/ACT, WA and Qld and was always first to volunteer to talk to primary school students as part of the RACI (Qld) Chemists in Schools Program.

Maj. Gen. Lafayette McClaws
Order dated May 1, 1865
(the last official order of a Confederate Officer) Information on this unit is excerpted from:
The Boys Went Forth to War
The Regimental History of The GA Military Institute Cadets
Vol. 2 of the Confederate Regimental History Series

HISTORICAL NOTES:
Organized May, 1864. Surrendered at Augusta, GA on May 20, 1865.
The rosters of Capers Battalion are found in the Southern Historical Society Papers. This regiment was made up of 16 and 18 year old boys from GA, TN, SC, and AL - all cadets at the Georgia Military Institute and commanded by Gen. Frank W. Capers. The article from the Southern Historical Society Papers gives some details of the unit's service. It was written by a member of Company B in 1905. Members of Company A and B are listed - but it stated it's a partial list. None of the listed men appear in either of the index compillations - Broadfoots (which is generally considered to be complete for the Confederate units) and Henderson's Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia (which has some known and recognized problems). Col. Jones, Georgia in the War, which was written just after the war, and considered to list every unit and their leaders, also has no mention of this unit. All of the cadets were from 16 - 18 years of age. Julius L. Brown, Color Corporal of Company A was the son of the Governor of Georgia - Joseph E. Brown. Samuel Spencer of Company B became president of Southern Railway later in life. Hal T. Lewis of Company B became a Supreme Court Justice!
