College Park, Maryland June 6 - 10 , 2004
Welcome from NSSA
Welcome to the second American Conference on Neutron Scattering! Your enthusiastic response reflects the strength of the neutron scattering community in the U.S. and Canada. A total of 389 abstracts were received, a 40% increase over the very successful first ACNS held two years ago in Knoxville, TN. Many of these abstracts represent the research work of young scientists, including over 50 abstracts from graduate students who are competing for the first Neutron Scattering Society of America Prize for Outstanding Student Research, foretelling a very bright future for the field. The papers presented in this conference show the diversity in science that is directly impacted by the use of neutron scattering including: biology, chemistry and materials, engineering/applications, instrumentation, soft matter, condensed matter physics and fundamental physics. At this meeting, the first Clifford G. Shull Prize in Neutron Science will be awarded to Dr. J. Michael Rowe "for his seminal vision, leadership, and contributions to the field of neutron scattering." The NSSA is extremely pleased be able to honor achievements in neutron scattering with both the Shull Prize and the NSSA Student Research Prize at the 2004 ACNS and we hope to continue this tradition in the future.

Shull, a 1994 Nobel Prize winner in Physics for his pioneering work in neutron scattering, died of kidney failure on 31 March 2001 in Lexington, Massachusetts, USA. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 23 September 1915, Cliff exhibited a strong interest in science in high school. He majored in physics at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, earning a BS degree in 1937, and then went on to graduate school at New York University (NYU), earning a PhD in physics in 1941. His thesis at NYU under Professor Frank Myers involved the construction of a Van de Graaf accelerator and the scattering of polarized electrons, so his focus was on nuclear physics.
Figure 1 In June 1941, Cliff finished his thesis and accepted a job with the Texas Company (later to become Texaco) in Beacon, New York. With the Texas Company, Cliff's work was on the study and characterization of catalysts used in making high-octane aviation fuel. In this work, he used X-ray diffraction and small-angle-scattering techniques to study powder samples, which gave him valuable experience for his later work with neutrons.

Former Piano Professor Nelson Whitaker Worked Behind Enemy Lines in WW II
Nelson Whitaker, professor of piano emeritus, died earlier this month at the age of 77. A classical pianist, Whitaker studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Conservatoire National in Paris as well as at the University of Texas, the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the Department of Music faculty in 1948 and taught piano for 46 years before retiring in 1994. In addition to teaching, he performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. "Nelson was a stimulating intellectual," said Ralph Zitterbart, associate professor of piano. "He could discuss anything, philosophy, politics, literature, economics and of course, music. "He was also one of the most dedicated teachers, always putting the welfare of the student first. He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I feel fortunate to have been one of those people," Zitterbart said.
