wilma surveys room for snacks do they give a "great effort" nobel? ...and rounding out the pack, happy birthday, Dad! More accurately, AARP discount-getting Dad! Oop...hope I didn't say too much there. Any web designers out there? I need the scoop on Macromedia Dreamweaver. Specifically, I can get version 3 on the cheap online, version 4 not so on the cheap. For the purposes of learning my way around the package, can I get away with version 3 for awhile? I've been hard-coding my sites since the start, and am kicking and screaming my way through this first experience with an online editor. Your comments are most appreciated Alright, about my little project. In the next year, I'm aiming to read at least one book by each of the Nobel Prize for Literature Laureates. Thankfully, I've already read a few of these authors. Even more thankfully, one of them was Ernest Hemingway. No offense to you Ernie fans, but at page 80, I'd had just about enough of him and that damn fish. I'll tackle another one of his books if and when I finish everyone else. So here's my call to youjoin me! As I acquire more information on these people and decide what I'll read, I'll post it to a special page just for this project. I'd also like to knowis anyone interested in a message board for this (and this only)? I've always been pretty wary of them, just as I am with listserves and their ilk. But this seems viable enough. If anyone gets weird, I'm most lucky to have some administrative IP-trace-and-block power over here. That, or Wilma will eat you. I swear, she will EAT YOU. Ya dig? She's so big that her body makes a sucking sound as she pries herself out of the sink and thunks to the ground.

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov (1905-1984) was born in the land of the Cossacks, now known as the Kamenskaya region of the R.S.F.S.R. He attended several high schools until 1918. During the civil war he fought on the side of the revolutionaries, and in 1922 he moved to Moscow to become a journalist. There he published a number of short stories in newspapers. He made his literary debut in 1926 with a volume of stories, Donskie rasskazy (Tales from the Don), 1926, about the Cossacks of his native region, to which he had returned two years earlier.
In the same year, 1926, Sholokhov began writing Tikhi Don (And Quiet Flows the Don), 1928-1940, which matured slowly and took him fourteen years to complete. Reminiscent of Tolstoy in its vividly realistic scenes, its stark character descriptions and, above all, its vast panorama of the revolutionary period, Sholokhov's epic became the most read work of Soviet fiction. Deeply interested in human destinies which are played against the background of the transformations and troubles in Russia, he unites in his work the artistic heritage of Tolstoy and Gogol with a new vision introduced into Russian literature by Maxim Gorky.
His other major work in the Don cycle

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov
Russian novelist, winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize for Literature for his novels and stories about the Cossacks of southern Russia.
After joining the Red Army in 1920 and spending two years in Moscow, he returned in 1924 to his native Cossack village in the Don region of southern Russia. He made several trips to western Europe and in 1959 accompanied the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to the United States. He joined the Communist Party in 1932 and became a member of the Central Committee in 1961. Sholokhov began writing at 17, his first published book being Donskie rasskazy (1926; Tales of the Don), a collection of short stories. In 1925 he began his famous novel Tikhy Don ("The Silent Don"). The slow evolution of Sholokhov's work is remarkable: it took 12 years to publish Tikhy Don (4 vol., 1928-40; translated in two parts as And Quiet Flows the Don and The Don Flows Home to the Sea) and 28 years to complete another major novel, Podnyataya tselina (1932-60; translated in two parts as Virgin Soil Upturned [also published as Seeds of Tomorrow] and Harvest on the Don). Oni Srazhalis za rodinu (1942; They Fought for their Country) is an epic tale of the Soviet people's bravery during the German invasion of World War II.

en:Michail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov Michail Scholochow 24. Mai in Kruschilin/ Don 21.
