Specifically, publication of an iris study on site, attendance of Advanced Irismeister Degree Program Seminars, a high median score of the Multiple Choice Question Same Day Certification Exam, publication of iris studies volumes, and other detailed and objective criteria offer everyone (the irismeister candidates) the coveted five stars. Honorary irismeisters are distinguished achievers of all times , to whom we pay due credit, y compris for criticizing our own brand new flavors of iris studies with serious data and flawless conjectures. Honorary irismeisters may also be active right now. O ne to F ive stars are only offered to irismeisters who devote more than 50% of their work and time to the iris cause. History : Neuroscience
    • Stone Age surgeons cut holes into the skull, probably to release "evil spirits" as the cause of headaches or strange behaviors
    • Aegyptians : embalmed the body but carefully extracted the brain from the skull and - trashed it deeming it unnecessary for an after life
    • Greeks : Noting the rich vascular supply of the brain, Aristotle concluded that it had to be an organ to cool the blood
    • Romans : As doctor of Roman gladiators Galen obviously noted the behavioral deficits that arise from traumatic injuries to head and brain. Life ( pneuma , i.e. breath) takes three forms: the brain forms the center of sensory perceptions and movement; the heart regulates blood and body temperature and the liver is the center of nutrition and metabolism. On epilepsy he writes: " In all forms it is the brain which is diseased; either the sickness originates in the brain itself,... or it rises in sympathy into the brain from the cardiac orifice of the stomach... Seldom, however, it can have its origin in any part of the body... and then rises to the head in a way which the patient can feel... "

The scientific giant that brought pain research and neurobiology into themodern era was the British physiologist, sir charles scott sherrington.
    http://www.parkinson.org/pain2002.htm
    Pain, 2002
The phenomenon of pain can be defined as: "an unpleasant sensation that can range from a minor annoyance to an overpowering experience. Pain warns the body about dangerous situations and injuries" . “Pain although usually thought of as an annoyance, is essential to the survival and well-being of an organism. It does this through alerting us to extremes that may be harmful to us such as excessive heat, cold, acidity. It alerts us of injury and disease, and also serves as a reminder of any “potentially unpleasant situations” that we would logically try to avoid in the future”. All multicellular organisms feel pain and it is one of the successes of evolution, ensuring the survival and health of organisms. Sometimes pain outlives its usefulness however and this can be stressful and debilitating. This is chronic pain and it is what gives pain a bad name in our society. In spite of the fact that we are just starting to understand pain, several scientists have been studying pain for centuries. "By the 1890s, physiological and medical concepts of pain had become known. The work of Rudolf Virchow in the 1850s and 1860s had demonstrated that cellular damage resulting in pain was associated with infection and trauma. The work of Charles Bell and Francois Magendie, showing that the posterior roots of spinal nerves responded to sensations whereas the anterior roots appeared to be associated with motor responses, laid the groundwork for the idea of a dedicated neural pathway of pain sensation. Further confirmation came from the work of Edouard Brown-Sequard on the pain pathway in the spinal cord; from the experiments of Max von Frey, who in 1896 identified 'pain spots' on the skin.

    DR. CHARLES SCOTT SHERRINGTON
Sherrington was born in London, studied in England and gravitated into physiology where he was strongly influenced by Michael Foster- "father of British Physiology," by Langley and Gaskill. He also worked briefly in neuroanatomy-neuropathology. He studied the latter with Cajal and with Robert Koch. His interest was in reflexes and he is best known for his lengthy studies in spinal reflexes. Also he will be remembered for his contributions to the physiology of perception, reaction and behavior. He even wrote on the philosophic study of dualism.
