Russian Civil War
Encyclopedia Definition: Russian Civil War
(1918 - 1920) Following the success of the Russian Revolution the Russian Communists decided to make a peace with Germany at the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk , ratified on March 6 . Despite re-organising the old army into the "Workers' and Peasants' Red Army " in January 1918, when the Germans began an advance into Russia in February the chaotic and undisciplined state of the army was such that a negotiated peace was the only option. This treaty galvanised a number of anti-Communist groups both inside and outside Russia into action against the new regime, Winston Churchill declaring that Bolshevism must be "strangled in its cradle".
Overview
The war was fought mainly between the "Reds", the communists and revolutionaries, and the "Whites" - the monarchists, democrats and conservatives who opposed the Russian Revolution. Also, there was a group of nationalist and anarchist movements was known as the "Greens" . In addition, the intervention of

To Russia With Love
Boost for intellectual exchange and collaboration between scientists and students from Russia and Singapore.
A team led by NUS' International Relations Office (IRO) with participants from the Office of Research (ORE), the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) and the Faculty of Science (FOS) braved the Russian winter to call on leading Russian universities and institutes, which have been a source of research and development in recent years. They successfully signed twelve memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for educational and research collaboration. The twelve institutions in Moscow and St Petersburg will kick off the IRO-led Eastern Europe Research Scientists and Students (EERSS) Programme. The program, targeted for an initial run of three years, will eventually cast its net wider to cover other institutions in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and other East European countries. The EERSS will provide opportunities for academics and students to experience different educational, intellectual and research environments. The interactions between academics, scientists and students from these institutions and NUS are likely to spawn new exchanges and project collaboration, leading to closer, long-term institutional relationships.

75. Nikolay Semenov - Biography
nikolay semenov – Biography. Nikolai Nikolaevic semenov was born inSaratov on April 3, 1896. He above. nikolay semenov died in 1986.
http://www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1956/semenov-bio.html
Nikolai Nikolaevic Semenov was born in Saratov on April 3, 1896. He graduated from Petrograd University in 1917 and in 1920 he took charge of the electron phenomena laboratory of the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute . He lectured at the Polytechnical Institute and was appointed Professor in 1928. In 1931, he became Director of the Institute of Chemical Physics of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences (which has moved to Moscow in 1943); from 1944 he has been a Professor at the Moscow State University
Semenov's outstanding work on the mechanism of chemical transformation includes an exhaustive analysis of the application of the chain theory to varied reactions and, more especially, to combustion processes. He proposed a theory of degenerate branching which led to a better understanding of the phenomena associated with the induction periods of oxidation processes. Semenov has made valuable contributions to the field of molecular physics; he has also carried out investigations on electron phenomena, dielectric breakdown and the propagation of explosive waves.
Semenov has written two important books concerned with his work.
