PRINTABLE PROFILE

Nikolay Nikolaevich Galda was born in the town of Zelenokumsk, located in the Stavropol region near Chechnia. He currently resides in Uja near Kholuy. Upon finishing from the Kholuy Art School in 1991, he had studied under the following teachers: Vladimir Timofavich Fiskov (Class leader),Semenov for drawing, Pechkin Mikhail Brisovich for art. His most well known piece, "Bulina - Legend" (For more information on this theme see Russian Lacquer Boxes,pg.18) is displayed in the Kholuy Art Museum.
Galda prefers to paint fairy-tales and folk legends, and are simply his all around favorite themes in art. Galda considers himself a traditional artist, which is evident in the techniques he employs in his lacquer art. Even though his work is traditional, he has a definitive style that is all his own. So much so, his techniques make his paintings very hard to duplicate, if not impossible. To keep himself challenged, he approaches each project with the intent of trying something new within the boundaries of the Kholuy tradition. In fact, Gala has developed several multi-layer gold leafing techniques that distinguishes his work from others. One notices the uniqueness of this technique in his application of painting chain-mail, which stands out in the quality of the painting and its originality. One note worthy example of this technique has been included in the book,"

Semenov, Nikolay Nikolaevich Russian physical chemist who studied chemical chain reactions, particularly branched-chain reactions, which can accelerate with explosive velocity. For his work in this area, in 1956 he became the first Russian to gain the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
Semenov was born in Saratov and studied at Petrograd (now St Petersburg). He became professor at the Physical-Technical Institute there 1928. He was director of the Institute for Chemical Physics at the Soviet Academy of Sciences 1931-44, and then moved to Moscow State University.
Semenov did his Nobel prizewinning work in the 1920s and summarized his results in his book Chemical Kinetics and Chain Reactions 1934.
Semenov also played an important part in resisting narrow interpretations of Marxism-Leninism in its application to chemistry.

4000 Years of Women in Science
Deborah Crocker (

Actually, how long have people been active in science? The answer is the same for both women and men as long as we have been human. One of the defining marks of humanity is our ability to affect and predict our environment. Science - the creation of structure for our world - technology - the use of structure in our world - and mathematics - the common language of structure - all have been part of our human progress, through every step of our path to the present. Women and men together have researched and solved each emerging need.
