Nobelova cena za fyziku pro rok 1959 Emilio Gino Segré * 1. 2. 1905 Tivoli, Itálie 22. 4. 1989 Lafayette, USA Segré byl synem podnikatele. Nejprve studoval v Tivoli, ale brzy zaèal navštìvovat univerzitu v Øímì. Již v roce 1927 spolupracoval s Fermim a stal se asistentem na univerzitì v Øímì. Od roku 1936 pùsobil jako profesor na univerzitì v Palermu, ale již po dvou letech emigroval do USA, kde nastoupil v ústavu v Berkeley. V Berkeley pracoval nejprve na vývoji jaderné bomby, ale v roce 1946 se stal na místní univerzitì profesorem. Segré se vìnoval v nejvìtší míøe atomové a jaderné fyzice, zabýval se spontánním štìpením jader. Spoleènì s Fermim studoval interakcí neutronù s atomovými jádry a jejich vliv na jaderné reakce. Pøi bombardování molybdenu deuterony vznikl první umìlý prvek - technecium - s protonovým èíslem 43, který se v pøírodì nevyskytuje a je pravdìpodobnì produktem štìpení uranu a plutonia. V roce 1940 byl pøi výrobì astatu s protonovým èíslem 33 a v roce 1941 pøi výrobì transuranu plutonia s protonovým èíslem 94. Poslední zmínìný prvek je významným štìpným materiálem pro jaderné zbranì a palivem pro jaderné elektrárny. Nejvìtším Segréovým objevem byl v roce 1955 objev antiprotonu a od té doby se vìnoval již jen výzkumu antinukleonù. V roce 1959 obdržel spoleènì s Chamberlainem Nobelovu cenu za objev antiprotonu.
