Glenn Theodore Seaborg, Nobel Laureate chemist, discoverer of 10 atomic elements including plutonium and one that now bears his name, Associate Director-at-Large of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University Professor of Chemistry for the University of California, and co-founder and chairman of the Lawrence Hall of Science, died February 25. He was 86. Seaborg's death came while he was convalescing at home in Lafayette, near Berkeley. The internationally renowned chemist and educator had suffered a stroke on August 24, 1998, while in Boston for the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. At the meeting, Seaborg was named one of the "Top 75 Distinguished Contributors to the Chemical Enterprise." To say that Seaborg had a high-profile career is an understatement. He is in the Guiness Book of World Records for having the longest entry in "Who's Who in America." In addition to sharing the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with the late Edwin McMillan for research into the transuranium elements (those beyond uranium on the periodic table), Seaborg received the National Medal of Science in 1991, this nation's highest award for scientific achievement. He was a member of the Manhattan Project, Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley (1958-1961), and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (the predecessor to today's U.S. Department of Energy) under Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon (1961-1971). He also served as president for both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society.

Adventures in the Atomic Age: From Watts to Washington

I liked this book a lot. It reminded me so much of some projects I have worked on in terms of the happenstance and there you are. Seaborg was a kind, sane and good person, and it really comes across in this book. Such a contrast to so many today, and the politics have become so impenetrable these days. The UC system was nearly new then, it made me really feel how California was bubbling with new and great possibilities 70-50 years ago. I wish I had met the man. I hope I can be somewhere near... more...

Adventures in the Atomic Age
, by Glenn T. Seaborg
Autobiography
Hardcover - 312 pages
First Edition, September 2001 Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux ISBN 0-374-29991-9 Glenn Seaborg (1912-1999) was the nuclear physicist who changed the world, for better or worse, by discovering several of the radioactive elements used in medical diagnosis and treatment, as well as those which made possible atomic power plants and the atomic bomb. Later he was the chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and a strong supporter of the nuclear test ban treaty. The complete title of the book is Adventures in the Atomic Age : From Watts to Washington On the book cover is a photo of Seaborg in his younger days, tinkering seriously with a geiger counter. Also shown is a more mature Seaborg, all smiles as he points out the element on the periodic table that was named after him, seaborgium, atomic number 106.

Science Giant Glenn Seaborg, 1912-1999 Posted March 3, 1999
In April 1992, Glenn Seaborg and his wife, Helen, celebrated his 80th birthday at Lawrence Hall of Science. The Time magazine cover behind them depicts Seaborg as chair of the Atomic Energy Commission, a position he held for a decade beginning in 1961. Peg Skorpinski photo.
Nobel Laureate Glenn Theodore Seaborg, one of the great chemists of the 20th century and an influential voice on national science policy as adviser to 10 U.S. presidents, died Feb. 25 at his home in Lafayette. Seaborg died of complications from a stroke he suffered in August. He was 86. A beloved professor of chemistry at Berkeley for nearly 60 years, he also served as chancellor of the Berkeley campus and since 1971 was associate director-at-large of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 1961, President Kennedy appointed Seaborg chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, where he served for 10 years under both Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. He was one of the last survivors of the Manhattan Project and the namesake of element 106 of the periodic table seaborgium (Sg).

Meet Glenn Seaborg
He won a Nobel Prize before he was 40. Nine presidents sought his advice. He discovered the element that makes atomic bombs explode. And he discovered radioisotopes used to treat millions of cancer patients. His accomplishments include:
  • Research scientist, discoverer of countless atomic isotopes and 10 elements, including plutonium and the element that now bears his name, seaborgium. Section head in the top-secret Manhattan Project. Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley. Chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. Co-founder and Chairman of the Lawrence Hall of Science.
His high profile career has led him to the forefront of many prominent scientific organizations, including serving as president of both the 138,000-member American Association for the Advancement of Science and the 150,000-member American Chemical Society.
Seaborg by Seaborg
When the phone rang in the Radiation Laboratory one January afternoon I recognized the Boston accent from the newscasts. President-elect John F. Kennedy wanted to know: Would I join his administration as head of the Atomic Energy Commission? I said that I needed to think it through.
