Glenn T. Seaborg
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Glenn Theodore Seaborg April 19 February 25 ) was an American atomic scientist . He was one of the first scientists to produce a transuranium element Of Swedish ancestry, Seaborg was born at Ishpeming, Michigan , grew up in South Gate , a suburb next to Watts ] in Los Angeles , took his A. B. degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in , and his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley in . He lived most of his retired life in Lafayette, California He followed Frederick Soddy 's work investigating isotopes , and discovered many new isotopes of common elements. As a graduate student in the doing wet chemistry research for his advisor Gilbert Newton Lewis , Seaborg devoured the text Applied Radiochemistry by Otto Hahn , of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin . For several years, Seaborg conducted important research in artificial radioactivity using the Lawrence cyclotron at Cal Berkeley. He was excited to learn from others that nuclear fission was possible but also chagrined, as his own research might have led him to the same discovery.
Seaborg also became expert in dealing with the great Berkeley physicist Robert Oppenheimer . Oppenheimer was so quick and knew so much, he had a habit of answering a junior man's question before it had even been stated. Often the question answered was more profound than the one asked, but of little practical help. Seaborg learned to state his questions to Oppenheimer very quickly and succinctly, and this habit of asking succinct questions stood Seaborg in good stead all his professional life.

Fast Fact Glenn Seaborg is the only person ever to patent an element.
Glenn T. Seaborg, Citizen-Scholar Peggy House It is impossible to overstate the accomplishments of a person who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest biography in Who's Who in America. Yet for all the accolades lavished upon Dr.Glenn Seaborg both during his life and since his death on February 25,1999, the legacy for which he will be most remembered at Northern Michigan University is his towering stature as citizen-scholar. Born just a few miles up the road in Ishpeming on April 19, 1912, young Glenn Theodore Seaborg was every bit the normal "Yooper." Although the family sold their belongings and bought one-way train tickets to California when young Glenn was only 10 years old, he never forgot his roots nor lessened his love for the U.P. Throughout his career as a scientist of the first magnitude and a popular speaker at the most prestigious scientific gatherings, he delighted in having his introduction include the fact that he was born in Ishpeming so that he could begin his talk by telling the audience,"I can see by the looks on some of your faces that there are a few people here who donÕt know where Ishpeming is. Well, let me put your minds at ease: it Õs right next to Negaunee." Two years ago, I had the privilege of accompanying Dr. Seaborg on a visit to Washington, D.C. As we met with congressmen and senators and other government officials, he proudly announced to each, "We're Yoopers, you know "then paused to see their responses.

Februar

69. Glenn Seaborg Tribute: A Man In Full

March 5, 1999
"There is a beauty in discovery." Glenn Theodore Seaborg (1912-1999) W hat is there to say about a career in which you win all the major awards in your field and the accolades you garner come from highly esteemed peers, presidents and other world leaders, celebrities from the sports and entertainment industries, and students of all ages? What is there to say about a life that was shared with a beloved wife of more than 56 years, much of it in a redwood house they designed themselves in which they raised six children? What is there to say about a man whose discoveries altered the course of history, immortalized his name on the periodic table of chemical elements and in the archives of the Nobel Prize Awards, and extended the life of his own mother? SEABORG WAS EXULTANT OVER THE ADDITION OF SEABORGIUM TO THE PERIODIC TABLE Glenn Theodore Seaborg passed away in his home early in the evening on February 25, 1999, following a stroke he suffered last August. The news was carried by every major newspaper in the country. That is what happens when giants shed their mortal coils, but the sadness conveyed in many of those stories comes only when the deceased personally touched the lives of the writers. For those of us at this laboratory, whether you knew him as Glenn, or as Dr. Seaborg, it is no surprise that so many writers were moved to eloquence. To know him at all, or to know about his life is to recognize that Glenn Theodore Seaborg was truly a man in full.

Glenn Seaborg, Leader of Team That Found Plutonium, Dies at 86 By Malcolm W. Browne, , February 27, 1999 Mr. Glenn T. Seaborg, leader of the scientific team that created plutonium the fuel used in the atomic bomb that destroyed Nagasaki in 1945 died on Thursday night at his home in Lafayette, California. Dr. Seaborg, who was 86, died of complications of a stroke he suffered last August while exercising on a flight of stairs at a scientific meeting in Boston. His longtime collaborator and friend at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, Albert Ghiorso, said that after Dr. Seaborg collapsed, he fell down the stairs and was seriously injured and lying helpless for several hours until he was discovered. He was mostly paralyzed thereafter. Although he was a chemist by training and occupation, Dr. Seaborg became one of the world's best-known nuclear physicists. He led the research that created nine artificial elements, all heavier than uranium. They were plutonium, americium (used today in smoke detectors), curium (used in medicine), berkelium, californium, einsteinium, fermium, mendelevium and nobelium. Besides these new elements, Dr. Seaborg and his team, which included Mr. Ghiorso as chief builder of the required apparatus, created many isotopes, or forms of elements, with differing numbers of neutrons in their nuclei.

here is a welcoming sort of clutter in the office of Glenn T. Seaborg- organized piles of books and papers, hundreds of photographs, a stepladder, various desk lamps, and, not surprisingly, several different displays of the periodic table of the elements. He is a busy man still engaged with a career in chemistry and physics that-so far- spans an incredible six decades. One of his displays of the periodic table-etched onto a glass plate-is an award that highlights in gold leaf the symbol for seaborgium, element 106. It is a potent reminder of Seaborg's legacy in the chemical sciences. In addition to being the discoverer of plutonium, he is the only chemist to hold patents on chemical elements (americium, curium). His revision of the periodic table-the actinide concept-still stands as the most significant since Mendeleyev's 19th-century design. Today, his research associates at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., are engaged in the search for new isotopes and new elements at the upper end of the periodic table, including the so-called superheavy elements.
