Glenn T. Seaborg, world-renowned nuclear chemist, educator, scientific advisor to 10 United States presidents, humanitarian, and Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (1951), passed away at his home in Lafayette, California, on Feb. 25, 1999, following a stroke suffered while attending the American Chemical Society meeting in Boston in August, 1998. Seaborg, who was Chancellor at UC Berkeley from 1958 to 1961, is probably best known for his co-discovery of plutonium (1941) and nine other transuranium elements, the formulation of the actinide concept (1945), his chairmanship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (1961-71), and his tireless efforts to improve U.S. science education at all levels. Seaborg was born on April 19, 1912 in Ishpeming, Michigan, of Swedish ancestry. He attended school there until he was 10 years old when his family moved to a small town near Los Angeles. He completed high school in the Los Angeles suburb of Watts in 1929, and then attended UCLA, where he received an A.B. in chemistry in 1934. He was admitted to graduate study in the Chemistry Department at UC Berkeley and received a Ph.D. in spring, 1937, in the depth of the Depression, but was soon asked by Professor G. N. Lewis to serve as his personal research assistant. The first chemical separation and positive identification of plutonium as plutonium-238 was accomplished in February 1941 by Seaborg; fellow instructor, Joseph W. Kennedy; Seaborg's first graduate student, Arthur C. Wahl; and E. M. McMillan. Soon after, the new isotope plutonium-239 was found to be highly fissionable. Because of potential military applications, these results were voluntarily withheld from publication until 1946, after World War II.

Glenn Theodore Seaborg April 19 February 25 ) was an American atomic scientist . He was one of the first scientists to produce a transuranium element Of Swedish ancestry, Seaborg was born at Ishpeming, Michigan , grew up in South Gate, a suburb next to Watts in Los Angeles , took his A. B. degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in , and his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley in He followed Frederick Soddy 's work investigating isotopes , and discovered many new isotopes of common elements. As a graduate student in the doing wet chemistry research for his advisor Gilbert Newton Lewis , Seaborg devoured the text Applied Radiochemistry by Otto Hahn , of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin . For several years, Seaborg conducted important research in artificial radioactivity using the Lawrence cyclotron at Cal Berkeley. He was excited to learn from others that nuclear fission was possible but also chagrined, as his own research might have led him to the same discovery. Seaborg also became expert in dealing with the great Berkeley physicist Robert Oppenheimer . Oppenheimer was so quick and knew so much, he had a habit of answering a junior man's question before it had even been stated. Often the question answered was more profound than the one asked, but of little practical help. Seaborg learned to state his questions to Oppenheimer very quickly and succinctly, and this habit of asking succinct questions stood Seaborg in good stead all his professional life.

Mission "This book chronicles the life of one of America's foremost chemists and a true hero of the Manhattan Project. Dr. Seaborg would like you to believe that his "being in the right place at the right time" enabled him to achieve such monumental results, but it is quite evident that the modest Glenn Seaborg had an intellect and work ethic second to none. Although the book Glenn T. Seaborg Discoverer of Plutonium In His Own Words My romance with the transuranium elements started 63 years ago, in 1934, soon after I became a chemistry graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. These were the undiscovered elements with atomic numbers greater than 92 (the atomic number of uranium), the heaviest naturally occurring element. We (the transuranium elements and I) were first introduced at the weekly chemistry seminar on nuclear science held in venerable Gilman Hall. Actually, I was introduced to what were thought to be the transuranium elements. I read articles by Enrico Fermi and coworkers about the induced radioactivities observed when elements such as uranium were bombarded with neutrons. Since some were published in their native Italian, they were a challenge to decipher.

In 1929 he graduated at David Starr Jordan High School in Los Angeles as valedictorian of his class. He entered the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1929, and received the degree of Ph. In addition to the discovery of transuranium elements, Dr. Seaborg and his colleagues are responsible for the identification of more than 100isotopes of elements throughout the Periodic Table. He is also the author of the actinide concept of heavy element electronic structure. In this connection, Dr. Seaborg demonstrated that the heavy elements form a "transition" series of actinide elements in a manner analogous to the rare-earth series of lanthanide elements. The concept demonstrated how the heavy elements fit into the Periodic Table and thus demonstrated their relationships to the other elements. In 1942, Dr. Seaborg married Helen L. Griggs. They have six children: Peter (b. 1946), Lynne (b. 1947), David (b. 1949), Stephen (b. 1951), John Eric (b. 1954), and Dianne (b. 1959).

Februar

in full GLENN THEODORE SEABORG American nuclear chemist best known for his work on isolating and identifying elements heavier than uranium. He was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize for Chemistry (with Edwin Mattison McMillan). Element 106, seaborgium, was named in his honour.
Seaborg Seaborg was educated at the University of California at Los Angeles (A.B., 1934) and the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1937). At Berkeley he was successively research associate, instructor, and assistant professor (1937-45), becoming professor of chemistry in 1946. He served as Berkeley's chancellor in 1958-61.
With his coworkers, Seaborg added (1940-55) ten new elements encompassing atomic numbers 94-102 and 106, of which plutonium (94) is the best known because of its use as a nuclear explosive and for nuclear power. During World War II, which he spent as a section chief at the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory, the first industrial production of plutonium was undertaken in newly devised uranium reactors, and Seaborg had the primary responsibility for isolating plutonium from the reaction products.
