The Austrian physicist Erwin Schroedinger (1887-1961) incorporated the wave nature of the electron suggested by de Broglie into the theory of the hydrogen atom, substituting standing waves to describe the likely whereabouts of the electron in favor of the Bohr-Sommerfeld orbits. These solutions to the Schrodinger wave equation are discrete in that they depend on an integral number of wavelengths to occur in a possible orbit so as not to cancel each other out. Two such electronic states, in which the hydrogen atom is in a stable position, are shown on the Swedish stamp.

Erwin Schrödinger

Erwin Schroedinger was born in 1887 in Vienna. Here he also studied physics from 1906 to 1910, the year he graduated. In 1914 he finished his habilitation. After World War I he first worked as senior lecturer at the Technical University of Stuttgart and shortly afterwards he became ordinary professor in Breslau. In 1927 he was called to the University of Berlin as Max Planck's successor. Schroedinger contributed essentially to building up of the quantum physics, the statistical mechanics and the general theory of relativity. Schroedinger transferred the idea of matter waves predicted by de Broglie to the gas theory and Bohr's atomic model. In opposite to Bohr he rejected the idea of an electron that circulates around an atomic nucleus following certain given orbits, and, instead, described electrons as standing waves in different geometric forms. In the partial differential equation, named later Schroedinger equation in honour of its inventor he summarized the three-dimensional wave function of electrons. Furthermore, Schroedinger managed to show the mathematic equivalence of his statement and the Heisenberg matrix mechanics (1927). Together with Paul Dirac he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 for his contributions to the development of Quantum Mechanics.

Erwin Schroedinger Austrian physicist with strong philosophical and poetical tendencies; he is best known as the founder of the wave equation of quantum mechanics, which is expressed beautifully as (ih/2 t) = H The equation was presented and developed in a series of papers in Annalen der Physik in 1926. The physicists of Copenhagen did not like Schroedinger's idea; when Schroedinger visited Copenhagen, Bohr kept arguing with him several days, even at Schroedinger's bedside when the latter got ill by catching a cold. Later, in 1935, he presented sharply a basic problem for interpreting quantum mechanics, in terms of "Schroedinger's Cat". The indeterminacy of a micro-state can be amplified by inserting an appropriate physical device, so that we can obtain a "mixed state" so to speak of "live or dead" of a poor cat confined to a box; but of course, when we see the cat, it is either alive or dead. Then what is the state of the cat when we do not open the box and still do not see its state? This became one of the favorite examples for illustrating the problems quantum mechanics poses. [In what state is the cat, when the wave function has not collapsed by observation?]

Introductory Note
This is a translation of Schro:dinger's three-part 1935 paper in Die Naturwissenschaften . Earlier that same year there had appeared the Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen paper (also famous in "paradoxology") which, Schro:dinger says, in a footnote, motivated his offering. Along with this article in German, Schro:dinger had two closely-related English-language publications. But the German, aside from its one-paragraph presentation of the famous cat, covers additional territory and gives many fascinating insights into Schro:dinger's thought. The translator's goal has been to adhere to the logical and physical content of the original, while at the same time trying to convey something of its semi-conversational, at times slightly sardonic flavor. The Physics of Models
In the second half of the previous century there arose, from the great progress in kinetic theory of gases and in the mechanical theory of heat, an ideal of the exact description of nature that stands out as the reward of centuries-long search and the fulfillment of millennia-long hope, and that is called classical. These are its features.

The story of Schroedinger's cat (an epic poem)
07-May-1982 Dear Cecil: Cecil, you're my final hope
Of finding out the true Straight Dope
For I have been reading of Schroedinger's cat
But none of my cats are at all like that.
This unusual animal (so it is said)
Is simultaneously live and dead!
What I don't understand is just why he
Can't be one or other, unquestionably.
My future now hangs in between eigenstates.
In one I'm enlightened, the other I ain't.
If you understand, Cecil, then show me the way And rescue my psyche from quantum decay. But if this queer thing has perplexed even you, Then I will and won't see you in Schroedinger's zoo. Randy F., Chicago Dear Randy: Schroedinger, Erwin! Professor of physics! Wrote daring equations! Confounded his critics! (Not bad, eh? Don't worry. This part of the verse Starts off pretty good, but it gets a lot worse.) Win saw that the theory that Newton'd invented By Einstein's discov'ries had been badly dented. What now? wailed his colleagues. Said Erwin, "Don't panic
