John Robert Schrieffer Following his graduation from Eustis High School in 1949, Schrieffer was admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where for two years he majored in electrical engineering, then changed to physics in his junior year. He completed a bachelor's thesis on the multiple structure in heavy atoms under the direction of Professor John C. Slater. Following up on an interest in solid state physics developed while at MIT, he began graduate studies at the University of Illinois, where he immediately began research with Professor John Bardeen. After working out a problem dealing with electrical conduction on semiconductor surfaces, Schrieffer spent a year in the laboratory, applying the theory to several surface problems. In the third year of graduate studies, he joined Bardeen and Cooper in developing the theory of superconductivity, which constituted his doctoral dissertation. He spent the academic year 1957-58 as a National Science Foundation fellow at the University of Birmingham and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, where he continued research in superconductivity. The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory will take this opportunity to honor his life-long dedication to science and leadership at a special one-day symposium on October 19, 200l, at the Hilton of Santa Fe. The J. Robert Schrieffer Symposium will precede the Physical Phenomena at High Magnetic Fields IV conference that Dr. Schrieffer has guided over the last decade. The commemorative symposium will feature other Nobel Prize winners and scientists who are distinguished in condensed matter physics in high magnetic fields. On the evening of October 18, there will be a reception followed the next day by a series of talks and an evening banquet dinner to celebrate Dr. Schrieffer's lifetime commitment to physics research and the scientific community. John Robert Schrieffer Bio Data I was born May 31, 1931, in Oak Park. I attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and then did graduate work at the University of Illinois, Urbana, receiving my Ph.D. in 1957. What I Did One day, I was riding the subway as a graduate student (yo! Urbana was a bigger town back then :-) when it all became very clear why metals lose electrical resistance at very low temperatures. This led to a Nobel Prize for Physics, for developing the BCS theory. Those other two initials are for my collaborators, John Bardeen and Leon N. Cooper Want to know more?
