NOVEMBER 30 - BIRTHS Andrew V. Schally
(source)
Born 30 Nov 1926
Polish-born American endocrinologist and corecipient , with Roger Guillemin and Rosalyn Yalow, of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Schally fled Poland with his family in 1939. Schally became a U.S. citizen in 1962. He became senior medical investigator with the Veterans Administration in 1973. He was noted for isolating and synthesizing three hormones that are produced by the region of the brain known as the hypothalamus; these hormones control the activities of other hormone- producing glands. These accomplishments were the synthesis of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), the isolation and synthesis of LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone), and studies of the action of somatostatin. Henry Taube
(EB) Born 30 Nov 1915
Canadian-born American chemist who in 1983 won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his extensive research into the properties and reactions of dissolved inorganic substances, particularly oxidation-reduction processes involving the ions of metallic elements. Metals often form complexes , in which other atoms cluster around the metal atom, transfering and sharing electrons among themselves to bind together. Taube discovered that during a reaction, a temporary "bridge" of atoms often forms between metal atoms. He studied the electron transfer across this bridge, speeding up reactions that would otherwise happen only slowly or not at all. His ideas are relevant beyond his own field of study, for example, in biochemical processes such as respiration.

New Kidney Cancer Treatment Proposed
NEW YORK, Jun 07 (Reuters Health) - Renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer, can be difficult to treat, frustrating doctors and patients with its tendency to resist both chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A report in the journal Cancer Research suggests that a hormone-based technique may be able to slow the growth of these tumors. Nobel Laureate Dr. Andrew V. Schally of the New Orleans Veterans Administration Medical Center and Tulane University in Louisiana, and colleagues used an animal model of human renal cell carcinoma to examine whether an artificial version of the hormone somatostatin would have an effect on tumor cell growth. Somatostatin is produced in the hypothalamus and it functions to prevent the release of a growth hormone called somatotropin from the pituitary. Since most kidney tumors have receptors for somatostatin on their cells, the study authors theorized that getting an agent similar to the hormone, called an somatostatin analog, to bind to these receptors might be a way of slowing the growth of kidney cancer cells.

Cancer Drug Traced to Tumor
Fluorescent probe elucidates pathway into cells Back to Volume 09, number 04 Issue Printer-Friendly Format Article published Winter 2000 Email this story to a friend
S cientists at the University at Buffalo and Tulane University have, for the first time, optically tracked in real-time the pathway of one of the most widely used cancer drugs linked to a peptide hormone carrier as it is being taken up by a human breast-cancer cell.
The investigation-funded by a $1,016,254 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research-demonstrates the power and utility of new photonic materials developed at UB that have allowed scientists this first-ever, bird's-eye view of the cellular pathway of the chemotherapeutic agent.
The compound used was AN-152, a combination of the commonly prescribed chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, which is linked to an LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone) analog that targets only cells with LH-RH receptors on them. This makes the compound specific to cancers of the ovary, breast, cervix and prostate, and possibly others, as well.
AN-152, now in animal trials, was first synthesized by Andrew V. Schally, PhD, MD, 1977 Nobel laureate in medicine and director of the Endocrine, Polypeptide and Cancer Institute of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans, and Attila Nagy, PhD, associate professor of medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, both of whom participated in the study.

Roger C. L. Guillemin, M.D., Ph.D.
Whose research has expanded our knowledge of the interplay between the hypothalamus and the endocrine system.
Award Citation
Dr. Guillemin identified and synthesided from ovine hypothalami, the thyrotopin-releasing horomone (TRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete thyrotropin, which in turn activates the thyroid.
More recently, he has isolated, determined the structure, and synthesized somatostatin (SRIF), which inhibits the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary, and also regulates the secretion of insulin and glucagon by the pancreas. The role of somatostatin in controlling glucagon and insulin secretion may provide new insights into the nature and treatment of diabetes mellitus.
