POLANYI (Chemistry, 1986) John Polanyi who was born in Berlin, Germany in 1929, migrated with his Hungarian parents to England in 1933. He did his university studies at Manchester University, earning his Ph.D. in 1952, the same year in which he came to Canada. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Research Council Laboratories in Ottawa from 1952-1954, and as a research associate at Princeton University from 1954-1956. In 1956 he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto where he has remained every since. His research involved the development of a new field of research in chemistry-reaction dynamics-providing a much more detailed understanding of how chemical reactions take place. For this work, he shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His ongoing research has earned him many other awards and honours, including, the Royal Medal of the Royal Society, and some thirty honorary degrees from six countries. Dr. Polanyi has served on the Prime Minister of Canada's Advisory Board on Science and Technology, and the Premier's Council of Ontario. An advocate of international human rights, he was a founding member of the Committee on Scholarly Freedom of the Royal Society, and the Canadian Committee for Scientists and Scholars, and the founding Chairman of the Canadian Pugwash Group in 1960. Dr. Polanyi has written extensively on science policy, the control of armaments, and peacekeeping.

NOVEMBER 30 - BIRTHS Andrew V. Schally
(source)
Born 30 Nov 1926
Polish-born American endocrinologist and corecipient , with Roger Guillemin and Rosalyn Yalow, of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Schally fled Poland with his family in 1939. Schally became a U.S. citizen in 1962. He became senior medical investigator with the Veterans Administration in 1973. He was noted for isolating and synthesizing three hormones that are produced by the region of the brain known as the hypothalamus; these hormones control the activities of other hormone- producing glands. These accomplishments were the synthesis of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), the isolation and synthesis of LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone), and studies of the action of somatostatin. Henry Taube
(EB) Born 30 Nov 1915
Canadian-born American chemist who in 1983 won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his extensive research into the properties and reactions of dissolved inorganic substances, particularly oxidation-reduction processes involving the ions of metallic elements. Metals often form complexes , in which other atoms cluster around the metal atom, transfering and sharing electrons among themselves to bind together. Taube discovered that during a reaction, a temporary "bridge" of atoms often forms between metal atoms. He studied the electron transfer across this bridge, speeding up reactions that would otherwise happen only slowly or not at all. His ideas are relevant beyond his own field of study, for example, in biochemical processes such as respiration.

Press Release: The 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
October 1977
The Karolinska Institute
has decided that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1977 should be divided, one half being awarded jointly to
Roger Guillemin and Andrew Schally
for their discoveries concerning "the peptide hormone production of the brain" and the other half to
Rosalyn Yalow
for "the development of radioimmunoassays of peptid hormones".
This year's Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine have made their discoveries within the field of peptide hormones (peptides being substances built up by chains of amino acids). Many hormones in the body belong to this group and are produced by the hypophysis, the thyroid gland, the parathyroid glands, the placenta, the gastro-intestinal tract and other tissues. New such hormones are still being discovered.
While chemical methods for quantitative analysis of other hormones in blood and urine were in common use in the middle 1950's, such specific analytical procedures were not available for peptide hormones. The main, but not the only reason for this was their occurrence in blood in extremely low concentrations. For example, the molar concentration of pituitary ACTH under basal conditions is 1 x 10

The Rise and Fall of
United Sciences of America
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
United Sciences of America (USA) was a multilevel company based in Dallas, Texas. When it began marketing, its founder predicted gross sales of $150 million for 1986 and $1 billion by 1989 which would have made it the fastest growing company in U.S. history. Anyone could become a distributor by completing an application and paying $24.50 for a Success System Kit and Manual. By August 1986, USA claimed to have over 100,000 distributors and gross sales in line with its predictions. The company also set up a research foundation to generate research through grants and office-based studies. Its story is interesting because USA was the first MLM company to use high-tech videotapes and a prominent scientific advisory board as sales tools and was also the hardest hit by government regulators.
Company Management
USA was founded by Robert M. Adler II, a Dallas businessman who had become wealthy by developing a computer that dials phone numbers and engages in interactive messages. USA's corporate brochure listed nine co-founders, including:
  • Jerris Leonard, a former U.S. Assistant Attorney General, was USA's president.
