Frederick Sanger received two Nobel prizes (in the same category), for his work on protein sequencing and DNA sequencing.
FREDERICK SANGER Frederick Sanger was born in Rendcombe, England. His father was a medical doctor and it was expected that Fred would also enter the medical field. As Sanger grew up, he became very interested in nature and science and when he went to Cambridge University , he made the decision not to study medicine. He felt that a career in science would give him a better chance to become a problem solver. Sanger was a conscientious objector during the war because of his Quaker upbringing. After his B.A. in 1939, he stayed at Cambridge to do a Ph.D. with Albert Neuberger, on amino acid metabolism. After his Ph.D. in 1943, Sanger started working for A. C. Chibnall, on identifying the free amino groups in insulin. In the course of identifying the amino groups, Sanger figured out ways to order the amino acids. He was the first person to obtain a protein sequence. By doing so, Sanger proved that proteins were ordered molecules and by analogy, the genes and DNA that make these proteins should have an order or sequence as well. Sanger won his first Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1958 for his work on the structure of protein.

    SELECTED PAPERS OF FREDERICK SANGER
edited by (Retired from Medical Res. Council Lab. of Molecular Bio., Cambridge)
This important volume is mainly concerned with the development of methods for "sequencing" — that is, determination of the order of the amino acids in proteins and of nucleotides in RNA and DNA. In 1943 the position of only one amino acid in a protein (insulin) was known, and Sanger's first paper resulted in finding a second amino acid. In his final paper in 1982 he describes the determination of a DNA sequence of 48,502 nucleotides. The papers describe the steady improvements in techniques, and exciting biological results revealed by the sequences.

Frederick Sanger modtog to nobelpriser i samme kategori, for sit arbejde med at bestemme aminosyre-sekvensen i proteiner.
    FREDERICK SANGER (1918-)
Frederick Sanger blev født i Rendcombe i England. Han tog afgangseksamen fra Cambridge University . Her fortsatte han med et Ph.D.-studie om aminosyrer-metabolisme i samarbejde med Albert Neuberger. Efter sin Ph. D. startede Sanger i 1943 med at arbejde for A. C. Chibnall.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Frederick Sanger Frederick Sanger was born on August 13, 1918, at Rendcombe in Gloucestershire, the second son of Frederick Sanger, M. D. , a medical practitioner and his wife Cicely. He was educated at Bryanston School and at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he took his B. A. degree in natural sciences in 1939. Since 1940 he has carried out research in the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge. From 1940 to 1943 he worked with Dr. A. Neuberger on the metabolism of the amino acid lysine and obtained a Ph. D. degree in 1943. Since 1943 his work has been concerned largely with problems related to the determination of the structure of proteins. These studies resulted in the determination of the structure of insulin. In 1940, he married Margaret Joan Howe; they have two sons and one daughter. Sanger was awarded the Corday-Morgan Medal. He was recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1958 "for his work on the structure of proteins, especially that of insulin", he was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry together with Walter Gilbert "for their contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids".
