Brief History of the Edward Bouchet Abdus Salam Institute (EBASI) In 1988, the Edward Bouchet Abdus Salam Institute (EBASI) [then known as the Edward A. Bouchet-ICTP Institute (EABI)] was created by Professor Abdus Salam, the late Nobel Laureate and Founding Director of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) [now known as the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (Abdus Salam ICTP)]. The objectives of EBASI include: [1] Providing a mechanism for synergistic scientific and technical collaborations between African and American physical scientists, engineers, and technologists; [2] Enhancing the impact of science and technology on the sustainable development of the countries on the African continent, and more specifically; [3] Increasing the technical manpower pool working in Africa today by facilitating the training of Ph.D. students from African universities. The Institute was named in honor of Edward A. Bouchet, who became in 1876 (Yale) the first African American and the first known person of African descent to earn the Ph.D. degree in Physics. African physicists affiliated with ICTP and the National Society of Black Physicists (USA) organized the Edward A. Bouchet-ICTP Institute. The Council is currently composed of seven African members [with another to be added soon], eight American members, and two representatives from ICTP. It was in 1998 that the name of the Institute was changed from its original name to its current name in order to honor the late Professor Abdus Salam.

Professor Abdus Salam, 1926-1996
Abdus Salam, who died on 21 November 1996, was one of the leading theoretical physicists of the century and the first Muslim to win the Nobel Prize. He was born on 29 January 1926 in Jhang in the Punjab in what was then India, the son of a clerk in the office of the Inspector of Schools. At age 14, he entered Government College, Lahore, breaking all records in the matriculation examination. He continued in like fashion, winning an unprecedented succession of prizes and scholarships, through the B.A. courses in both English and Mathematics, ending by taking his M.A. in Mathematics from Lahore in June 1946. That summer, Salam won a scholarship to Cambridge. St John's had been expecting another student from India, who had intended to do research in English Literature, but he withdrew in August. The Indian High Commission offered to nominate another student in his place and the College said that it would prefer an undergraduate. It was by this happenstance that Abdus Salam came to St John's. Once in Cambridge, Salam did not take long to impress his new teachers, as the recollections by Fred Hoyle which follow make clear. Salam first took the a two-year course to Part II of the Mathematical Tripos, followed by Part II of the Physics Tripos a year later, being placed in the First Class in each. In 1949 he began research in the Cavendish Laboratory. Nicholas Kemmer, one of the pioneers of theoretical elementary particle physics, later Tait Professor of Mathematical Physics in Edinburgh, was his first official research supervisor, but Kemmer put him in the direction of Paul Matthews, then a postdoctoral fellow, thus initiating a lifelong association. Matthews introduced Salam to the problems of renormalisation theory.

Salam, Abdus (b. Jan. 29, 1926, Jhang Maghiana, Punjab, India), Pakistani nuclear physicist, corecipient with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Lee Glashow (qq.v.) of the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics for work in formulating a theory that encompasses both the electromagnetic interaction and the so-called weak interaction of elementary particles (see fundamental interaction). He was the first Pakistani to win a Nobel Prize. Salam attended the Government College at Lahore. In 1952 he received his Ph.D. in mathematics and physics from the University of Cambridge. He returned to the Government College as professor of mathematics, 1951-54, and then went back to Cambridge as a lecturer in mathematics. He became professor of theoretical physics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, in 1957 and director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics at Trieste, Italy, in 1964.

The same calamity befell this article.... Later other issues absorbed our thought and sight and this article receded into oblivion. Therefore it is being published rather belatedly. However, this delay ushered in a silver lining: we got the opportunity to draw upon the latest information on the subject. It is our pleasure to present the article revised and revamped for our readers.

Abdus Salam January 29 November 21 Nobel Laureate Physics in 1979, for his work in electroweak theory which is the mathematical and conceptual synthesis of the electromagnetic and weak interactions - the latest stage reached until now on the path towards the unification of the fundamental forces of nature. The validity of the theory was ascertained in the following years through experiments carried out at the superprotosynchrotron facility at CERN in Geneva which led to the discovery of the W and Z particles Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, from 1964 to December 1993, died in Oxford in 1996, after a long illness. "Abdus Salam's scientific work spans much of the history of particle physics, from early days of quantum field theory to the present. He contributed to what are now basic ideas about functional determinants, symmetries in physics, the construction of the standard model, superspace constructions of supersymmetric theories, and more. This collection contains many papers that are still fresh after the passing of time." Edward Witten

A wonderfully distinctive and beautifully written example of ancient Persian literature. It is a must read for ages 10 and up. The stories have interesting, action-packed plots and end by showing a good moral. They have a variety of different human and animal characters. The book also includes many gorgeous Persian-style illustrations. It is a bit like Aesop's Fables, only better.I hope that anyone who reads this great book will enjoy it as much as I have! more...
