Abdus Salam, Nobel Laureate in Physics (29/1/1926-21/11/1996)
Salam was my supervisor for the Ph. D. degree, 1957-1959. I finished it in October 1959, and was examined in April 1960, with Peierls as the external examiner. I had chosen my own field of research, known at the time as axiomatic quantum field theory. Salam had done his best to get me a good problem in particle physics. In 1958, a fat document came to him from Birmingham; it was the thesis of a certain S. Mandelstam , and Salam told me "this seems to be important". I read about the double dispersion relations, which I immediately wished I had thought of. I comforted myself with the thought that the paper was based on a conjecture, not a proved result, unlike the case for single dispersion relations. After a few days, Salam asked me how I was getting on. I made out that I was not very enthusiastic about the double dispersion relations, by asking, what was the research problem he was offering? Should I try to prove the Mandelstam relations from the Wightman axioms? He replied, "you can try to DISPROVE them if you like; if you don't want the document, let me have it back". He duly gave it to S. W. McDowell, a visiting Fellow, who was able to find a publishable result on the subject.

Basic Islamic Beliefs What's New Muslims Today ... Search this site Abdus Salam Clinton Sipes The amazing story of a violent, drunken, racist, cross-burning Klu Klux Klan member transformed into the "servant of peace". I grew up in a dysfunctional family setting in the atmosphere of alcoholism, physical and emotional abuse that came from my father. Without a positive father figure, I was basically developing antisocial behavior and inclination to violence. I began to imitate what I was being exposed to, this process of imitation began unconsciously, it affected my interaction with my older brother, classmates, teachers and animals also. Nothing was exempt from the sadistic outpouring of pent up anger and rage! At the age of 13 I fell into association with similar children but because they weren't as driven as I was, I quickly became bored with them and I began to hang out with the young adult type who welcomed my willingness to participate with no reservations in anything under the title of alcohol, drugs, crime, violence and racism. The period of reform school (adolescent jail) began and that environment also shaped me, refining crime inclination to a full time skill. Violence and racism were honed to razor sharpness...an environment of negativity that fueled my growing rage and hatred of authority, blacks, Jews and Asians. After 3 years of this (reform period) I was released. I was a walking grenade.

Physics Salam, Abdus Salam, Abdus (January 29, 1926 - ; India) Abdus Salam is a Pakistani nuclear physicist who has the distinction of being the first and only Pakistani to have been awarded a Nobel Prize for Physics which he coreceived with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Lee Glashow in 1979. The research that led to the Nobel Prize involved the formation of a theory that involved the electromagnetic interaction and weak interaction of elementary particles. Born in Jhang Maghiana, Punjab, India, Salam's education involved attendance at Government College at Lahore (now Pakistan). Following Government College, Salam attended the University of Cambridge where he received his Ph.D. in both mathematics and physics in 1952. Upon the completion of his degree, Salam went back to Government College to take up a position as mathematics professor, a position he held until 1954. At that point, Salam returned to the University of Cambridge where he lectured in mathematics. Three years later, Salam became a professor of theoretical physics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. Finally, in 1964, Salam moved to Italy and held the position as director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Britannica, 10:347, 1994; and Barba, p. 67, 1995).

In this age of globalization, the ICTP continues to stem the brain drain of physicists from developing nations while at the same time responding to new scientific challenges.
Juan G. Roederer
The early 1960s were very good years for science in the industrialized world. Both the decision-makers and the public shared a faith in the usefulness and importance of fundamental science, and there was unfaltering trust in the scientific community. Although the world was ideologically split into two camps, science was recognized by nearly everyone as an integral part of human culture and development. However, science did not fare as well in most developing countries, some of which had just gained their independence. The number of scientists active in research in such countries was small. As scientists emigrated to more developed nations, the resulting brain drain delivered serious blows to the scientific communities of those researchers, leaving deep scars in the intellectual fabric of their countries.

An analysis and summary of Muhammad 'Abdus Salam Faraj's influential Islamist text "Jihad: The Absent Obligation" is currently being prepared. The English edition of this book was published by Maktabah al Ansaar in England. It can be ordered online at:
www.maktabah.net

Mohammad 'Abdus Salaam Faraj was born in 1952 in Egypt. He studied electrical engineering at Cairo University. Faraj was excuted by the Egyptian government in April 1982 for his opposition to the government and his Islamist activites. More details of his life and writings are forthcoming. In the meantime, the following quotes summarize the jist of the text in terms of Islamist theory. Most of the book makes use of passages in the Quran and the Sunnah to back up the many assertions made about aggressive Jihad to rid the world of non-Sharia law based political systems. The sample assertions quoted below are by no means comprehesive of Faraj's argumentation, rather merely illustrative.
from Jihad: The Absent Obligation "Indeed the glad tidings regarding the establishement of the Islamic State and the return of the Khaliphate (Islamic State) were given by the Messenger of Allah, not to mention that they are part of the Commandments of Allah. Further, it is obligatory upon every Muslim to do his utmost to implement them."

The Nobel Prize in Physics

Abdus Salam was born in Jhang, a small town in what is now Pakistan, in 1926. His father was an official in the Department of Education in a poor farming district. His family has a long tradition of piety and learning.
When he cycled home from Lahore, at the age of 14, after gaining the highest marks ever recorded for the Matriculation Examination at the University of the Panjab, the whole town turned out to welcome him. He won a scholarship to Government College, University of the Panjab, and took his MA in 1946. In the same year he was awarded a scholarship to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he took a BA (honours) with a double First in mathematics and physics in 1949. In 1950 he received the Smith's Prize from Cambridge University for the most outstanding pre-doctoral contribution to physics. He also obtained a PhD in theoretical physics at Cambridge; his thesis, published in 1951, contained fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics which had already gained him an international reputation.
In 1954 Salam left his native country for a lectureship at Cambridge, and since then has visited Pakistan as adviser on science policy. His work for Pakistan has, however, been far-reaching and influential. He was a member of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, a member of the Scientific Commission of Pakistan and was Chief Scientific Adviser to the President from 1961 to 1974.

*Farewell to Abdus Salam
Professor Muhammad Abdus Salam, member of the South Commission from Pakistan, died on 21st November 1996, at the age of 70. Nobel Prize winner in Theoretical Physics, he was internationally famous for his intellectual achievements but, especially in the South, also as the founder and leader of the Third World Academy of Sciences and a leading champion of the role of Science and Technology in development. Being on the South Commission broadened but did not add much to his fame; it did make a lot of difference to the Report of the Commission. Abdus Salam was committed to two things: to Science; and to the development of the countries of the South. From the first meeting of the Commission, the other members learned that, to Professor Salam, the development of South countries depended upon their giving first priority to Science. Whatever aspect of development was under discussion, Abdus Salam brought it round to Science and Technology! The emphasis given to Science and Technology in the South Commission's Report The Challenge to the South is thus entirely due to Abdus Salam. That the subject was completely integrated into the Report, rather than being isolated in one or two Chapters, can be attributed in part also to his work in tandem with another Commission Member, Augustin Papic.

A Tribute to Abdus Salam
by M.J. Duff Some personal reminiscences by a former graduate student of the life and works of Abdus Salam. (An after-dinner talk delivered at the Workshop on Frontiers in Field Theory, Quantum Gravity and String Theory , Puri, India, 12-21 December 1996.)
When all else fails, you can always tell the truth.
Abdus Salam The death earlier this month of Abdus Salam was a great loss not only to his family and to the physics community; it was a loss to all mankind. For he was not only one of the finest physicists of the twentieth century, having unified two of the four fundamental forces in Nature, but he also dedicated his life to the betterment of science and education in the Third World and to the cause of world peace. Although he won the Nobel Prize for physics, a Nobel Peace Prize would have been entirely appropriate. At the behest of Patrick Blackett, Salam moved to Imperial College, London, in 1957 where he founded the Theoretical Physics Group. He was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1959. He remained at Imperial as Profesor of Physics for the rest of his career and it was there that I was fortunate enough to be his PhD student from 1969 to 1972. In 1964 he established the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, where he remained until recently as its Director. Among Salam's earlier achievements was the role played by renormalization in quantum field theory when, in particular, he amazed his Cambridge contempories with the resolution of the notoriously thorny problem of overlapping divergences. His brilliance then burst on the scene once more when he proposed the famous hypothesis that
