Fahmi Omar Fahmi Omar , former head of Egyptian Broadcasting, broke the news of the army coup d'état on the morning of 23 July 1952 to an anxious Egyptian public.
o. abdel-latif "This is Cairo. The clock of Fouad University has just struck 7:30am. Here is the news." With these words, Fahmi Omar, then a presenter at Egyptian Broadcasting and later head of the network, first broke the news of the momentous events that had taken place overnight in Egypt to his listeners on the morning of 23 July 1952.
Those at the receiving end, however, still would not have had any idea of the news that Omar was about to break, nor could they have known that this news was going to change the face of Egypt forever. At that time, Omar remembers, news was a precious commodity, the country having been in political turmoil for months, and people would tune in anxiously each day to hear the latest developments. "We had had three cabinets in three days at that time," Omar says, "and there was a real desire among people to make sense of the chaos that seemed to be engulfing the country."
The now 74-year-old Omar has an impressive memory of those says half a century ago. He vividly remembers the minutest details of the day the army took over the country and of how the leaders of the coup then went public with the news. Omar had joined Egyptian Broadcasting, then owned by Marconi, an English company, two years earlier in May 1950, and when the revolution broke he was in charge of the morning shift at the radio.

The Modern Metropolis
Years before the 1952 Cairo fire, a young Egyptian officer called Gamal Abdel-Nasser was determined to drive the British forever out of Egypt. Nasser was born in 1918 in the poor Alexandrian suburb of Bacos to southern Egyptian parents. He graduated at the Military College and fought at the first Arab-Israeli War. Together with a group of colleagues, he formed a semi-underground organization, The Free Officers , and carefully planned his coup. In the morning of July 23, 1952, Egyptians heard on the news that the Free Officers, led by General Mohamed Naguib , assumed control over strategic military zones within Cairo and elsewhere in a white coup. General Naguib was a respected senior officer who was only appointed as a figure-leader to enhance the credibility of the coup. On July 26, King Farouk of Egypt left Alexandria on his personal Yacht, never to return to Egypt again, and his toddler son, Ahmad Fouad , was soon declared King. The remaining British troops were asked to evacuate the country and, by 1954, the last British soldier had indeed left. Whatever their motive, the Free Officers gradually engaged in politics during the following years. Some believe they were driven by the events and supported by the long-oppressed citizens, some think they were seduced by power, and others affirm that every step was planned from the very beginning. In 1953, the Free Officers deposed Ahmad Fouad, the last King, and declared Egypt a Republic, with Mohamed Naguib as its first president. Naguib, who grew up within the old system, was a courageous yet peaceful man and had no plans for radical change. So he too was deposed in 1954 by the true leader of the coup, Nasser, who became the country's head of state. Mohamed Naguib was banned from participating in politics, and died broke in 1981. He was the first Egyptian to rule Egypt since the Pharaoh Nectanebo I, a contemporary of Alexander the Great.

The Camp David Accords
The Framework for Peace in the Middle East
Muhammad Anwar al-Sadat, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Menachem Begin, Prime Minister of Israel, met with Jimmy Carter, President of the United States of America, at Camp David from September 5 to September 17, 1978, and have agreed on the following framework for peace in the Middle East. They invite other parties to the Arab-Israel conflict to adhere to it.
Preamble
The search for peace in the Middle East must be guided by the following:
  • The agreed basis for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Israel and its neighbors is United Nations Security Council Resolution , in all its parts.
  • After four wars during 30 years, despite intensive human efforts, the Middle East, which is the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of three great religions, does not enjoy the blessings of peace. The people of the Middle East yearn for peace so that the vast human and natural resources of the region can be turned to the pursuits of peace and so that this area can become a model for coexistence and cooperation among nations.
  • The historic initiative of President Sadat in visiting Jerusalem and the reception accorded to him by the parliament, government and people of Israel, and the reciprocal visit of Prime Minister Begin to Ismailia, the peace proposals made by both leaders, as well as the warm reception of these missions by the peoples of both countries, have created an unprecedented opportunity for peace which must not be lost if this generation and future generations are to be spared the tragedies of war.

Two of Osama bin Laden's closest associates Ayman al-Zawahiri and Muhammad Atef are Egyptians with strong ties to Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), the radical group behind the 1981 killing of Egyptian president Anwar el-Sadat. (According to recent intelligence reports, Atef also plotted details of the 1998 African embassy bombings and the Sept. 11 U.S. attacks.) In 1998, bin Laden's Al Qaeda organization and EIJ announced that they were merging to form the World Islamic Front for Fighting Crusaders and Jews. Here, FRONTLINE's interviews and background readings explore the Egyptian origins of Islamic extremism and how, over the decades, events and forces in Egypt have shaped the minds and motivations of today's terrorists.
Nabil Fahmy

Egypt's ambassador to the United States discusses in this interview how Egypt successfully cracked down on its own internal Islamist terrorism and defends the tactics that were used. He also talks about what fuels anti-Americanism in the Middle East. This interview was conducted mid-September 2001.
Fouad Allam

For 20 years he headed Egypt's security service. Following Anwar el-Sadat's assassination in 1981, General Allam and the new president, Hosni Mubarak, waged a campaign against radical Islam not seen since the days of former President Gamal Abdel Nasser in the 1950s and 1960s. It included unlawful arrest, detention without trial, and torture to force confessions. Thousands of suspected terrorists were rounded up and jailed, among them Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, who was later convicted of conspiring to blow up New York City landmarks, and Ayman al-Zawahiri, one of bin Laden's two top lieutenants. This interview was conducted mid-September 2001.

An unsparing new report by Arab scholars explains why their region lags behind so much of the world
1) 1 in 5 Arabs live on less than $2.00 a day.
1 in every 2 woman can't read or write.
The actual UN Report can be downloaded from here.

Unfortunately, if one actually follows the link to the actual UN report, the UN report
includes in it's overview a section describing why all of the arab's problems are caused by Israel (and by implication the US), and, of course, no mention of terrorism. Why can't someone publish anything in the arab world that is at all critical unless it first blaming Israel for all of the problems. We have a long way to go.
