Mohamed Abdel-Ghani El-Gamasi (1921-2003)
Click to view caption From top Mubarak leads the mourners at the funeral; El-Gamasi's coffin draped in the Egyptian flag; with Sadat, overseeing operations during the 1973 October War Field Marshal Mohamed Abdel-Ghani El-Gamasi, a hero of the 1973 October War and a veteran of other Arab-Israeli wars since 1948, passed away last Saturday. El-Gamasi had suffered several strokes and undergone open-heart surgery over the past few years. Four months ago he fell into a coma, and ended up spending three weeks in the hospital. Afterwards, his doctors advised him to drastically cut down his daily activities and spend most of his time at home. Despite his failing health, El-Gamasi spent his later years touring the United States, the then-Soviet Union and the Arab world, conducting lectures on military strategies and techniques.

Contents Front Back Issues Contact Us ... RU Home During the 1985-86 school year, Jehan Sadat graced the RU community as our first Distinguished Visiting Professor, sharing her wisdom and experience with students on the subjects of women in the Third World and the history of her homeland, Egypt, and inspiring all who came in contact with her. Today, her insight is all the more welcome. After a few years, however, she gradually resumed her role as educator, lecturer and activist. Currently, she is Associate Resident Scholar at the University of Maryland, where the Anwar Sadat Chair for Development and Peace was established and fully endowed in 1997. The wonders of email allowed me to interview her despite her incredible schedule. What follows are, in her own words (albeit condensed), her thoughtful responses to questions about the current state of the world.
Despite the protracted violence, I will not abandon the idea of peace. I will continue to give a message of peace and to remind others that my husband, who was the first to make peace, also gave his life for peace. The best way to improve the standard of living and the economic well-being of a nation is through the education and training of the people.

    Historia y Gobierno: Historia:

There is no consensus about Anwar El-Sadat in Egypt
By Heba Saleh in Cairo Twenty years after the assassination of the former Egyptian president, Anwar El-Sadat, a film about his life has just opened in Egypt. Mohamed Khan directed the film, Days of Sadat, which is based on the autobiographies of the former Egyptian president and the first lady, Jehan.
Mr Khalil: President Sadat really was a man of vision
"He's unlike any other of our presidents, in the sense that the guy comes from the countryside, poor peasant, struggling family, gets involved in liberation movements, assassinations. He falls in love after a first marriage with a younger girl, becomes a president, takes controversial steps, like making peace with the enemy. This is not a usual person," says Mr Khan. In the West, Sadat is regarded as a man of vision and courage. But here in Egypt, there is still no consensus about the merits of his political decisions.

Recorded history in Egypt began around 4,000 B.C. when nomadic hunters settled in the Nile Valley. But it was in 3,100 B.C. that Egypt crowned her first Pharaoh, Menes, who later unified the country's two regions, Lower Egypt (The Delta) and Upper Egypt (from Giza to Aswan in the South). Egypt's history can be summarized as follows:
    Predynastic Egypt
    C 5,000-3,200 B.C.
    Dynastic Egypt
C 3,200-2,700 B.C. Development of society, Law, and religion.
    The Old Kingdom
C 2,700-2,260 B.C. Great achievements especially in the fields of administration, astronomy and architecture.
    The Middle Kingdom
C 2,260-1,780 B.C. An era of prosperity and expansion of political strength and economic horizons. Thebes became the capital. Later, Egypt was invaded by the Hyksos, coming from Caucasia, who remained for 150 years until finally driven back.
    The New Kingdom
C 1,580-1,085 B.C. Four centuries of splendor, prosperity and spiritual and artistic achievements. Architecture reached heights.
    The Decline
C 1,090-332 B.C. The country fell under the influence or priests. In 525 B.C., Egypt was conquered by the Persians.
    The Greco Roman Period
C 332 B.C.-640 A.D. In 332 B.C. Alexander the Great took possession of Egypt, called himself a Pharaoh, and founded the City of Alexandria. After his death, the Ptolemaic Dynasty was founded, and Alexandria flourished. Disputes and fratricidal wars ended the Greek domination marked by Cleopatra's suicide. Afterwards, Egypt became a Roman Province.

    Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat
Liberator of Sinai Born into s family of 13 children in 1918, Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat grew up among average Egyptian villagers in the town of Mit Abul Kom 40 miles north of Cairo. Having completed a grade school education, Sadat’s father worked as a clerk in the local military hospital. By the time of his birth, Anwar’s Egypt had become a British protectorate. Crippling debt had forced the Egyptian government to sell the British government its interests in the French engineered Suez Canal linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean. The British and French had used these resources to establish enough political control over Egyptian affairs to refer to Egypt as a British colony In 1956 as part of a deal between the British and the Wafd party, the British agreed to create a military school in Egypt. Sadat was among its first students. Upon graduating from the academy, the government posted Sadat to a distant outpost. There he met Gamal Abdel Nasser , beginning a political association that eventually led to the Egyptian presidency. At this outpost, Sadat, Nasser and other young officers formed a revolutionary group destined to overthrow British rule. Commitment to their revolution led Sadat to jail twice. During his second stay in jail, Sadat taught himself French and English. But the grueling loneliness of jail took its toll. After leaving prison, Sadat returned to civilian. He acted for a bit, and he joined in several business deals.
