His first novel was published in 1939 and ten more were written before the Egyptian Revolution of July 1952, when he stopped writing for several years. One novel was republished in 1953, however, and the appearance of the Cairo Triology, Bayn al Qasrayn, Qasr al Shawq, Sukkariya (Between-the-Palaces, Palace of Longing, Sugarhouse) in 1957 made him famous throughout the Arab world as a depictor of traditional urban life. With The Children of Gebelawi (1959), he began writing again, in a new vein that frequently concealed political judgements under allegory and symbolism. Works of this second period include the novels, The Thief and the Dogs (1961), Autumn Quail (1962), Small Talk on the Nile (1966), and Miramar (1967), as well as several collections of short stories.

Ayam El-Sadat (Days of Sadat)
Starring: Ahmed Zaki, Mervat Amin, Mona Zaki, Ahmed El-Sakka
Directed by: Mohamed Khan

The cairolive.com rating: 6 (out of 10) Do you like Anwar El-Sadat? That may be the most valid indicator as to whether or not you'll like this film. For this film, more than anything, is a film from the perspective of Anwar El-Sadat, and his wife Jehan. Sadat is portrayed as a hero, who always has been one, and Jehan's love for the young revolutionary knows no bounds. Ayam Al-Sadat is a nicely paced if a bit too crudely cut dramatization of the life of a man who did so much that any part of it could have been made into an intricate drama. But no the goal here is to harvest 40 years or more. Much more actually, if you count the double and triple flashbacks to Sadat learning Qur'an in a kuttab, and working as a tiny boy in the fields like every other fallah. Perhaps everybody who sees this film will learn something they didn't already know about the late president of Egypt. "I didn't know Jehan's mother was English!" said one movie-goer. This is the story of a revolutionary man. He helps organize political assassinations, deftly cons his way out of criminal trials, spends quality time in solitary confinement, and arrives at the revolution a little late after all, he was at a movie. It's all in here his life with Abdel-Nasser, the '73 war, peace with Israel, his assassination. A survey of the life of one of the most important Egyptians of the 20th century.

As Egyptian Air Force jets were flying over the parade ground, a lorry in the ground procession stopped in front to of the presidential rostrum, apparently because of mechanical failure. Armed men then emerged from the lorry and approached the rostrum, throwing grenades and firing with automatic weapons. The President was hit almost immediately and seven others were injured, some seriously. It was subsequently established by the Egyptian authorities that four men had mounted the attack, all of whom were arrested. Keesings Worldwide Online

Destiny, Luck or circumstances Luck or mere circumstances may have played their major part in my life. I was born in Port-Said on December 18th., 1937, grown up and spent my childhood and the early teen years in this Multicultural, half European City with its various civilisations. As the rest of the Port Said citizens, our life was bound to the Suez Canal, my father who was working as Engineer at the International Suez Canal Company ). Witness of some modern Egyptian History Living in Port Said was a coincidence of life, that helped to witness the most critical era of the modern.
Egyptian History
President Anwar El Sadat Hady was a leading member of Misr El Faith (Young Egypt) movement, which aimed at fighting the British Occupation - by all means -. Often, I had to join our servant when he brought food to him and to his cell comrade (with hidden instructions in my shorts from Mohamed Makhlouf, the one who used to print the Propaganda leaflets against the Occupation, and later against the Anglo-French troops in Port Said ), because the police guard let me in without searching. I never imagine that this friendly dark-skinned man sharing the cell with my brother was Major Mohamed Anwar El Sadat !!!!!. and as it happened , would become sometime the President of Egypt ?. Jehan El-Sadat:
Destinies forged anew
In softly echoing reception rooms, the past is history
but its perfume lingers on Profile by Fayza Hassan
..the wedding;
with 6 October veterans;
with former President Jimmy Carter;

Rafiki preceded his mistress by half a step as she walked into the elegantly appointed reception rooms of the once heavily guarded villa on the Nile, President Anwar El-Sadat's residence. The grey Persian sniffed the air delicately friends or foes? and, reassured, made the rounds to allow our culture editor Mursi Saad El-Din and myself to admire him in all his furry splendour. A beauty in his own right, Rafiki did not attract the attention he deserved from me, however, as I watched Jehan El-Sadat approach, a welcoming smile brightening her luminous eyes, so reminiscent of those of her feline companion. In the sun filtering through the bay windows, they shone almost gold and it was only later that I could determine their colour more accurately: a light green with dancing specks of orange. A translucent complexion given to blushing and lightly dusted with freckles, as well as light blond hair, betrayed an Anglo-Saxon connection. She wore unpretentious, well-cut grey silk pants, with a matching short top and a long silk blouse in a snakeskin print. The mules on her feet featured the same design, a hint that Mrs El-Sadat is up on the latest fashions.
