October 16 ~  Peace Egypt During the Sadat Years Peace is more p r e c i o u s than a piece of l a n d ~ Anwar Sadat On this date in 1970, Mohamed Anwar El Sadat (1918-1981) was elected President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Sadat was born in the Nile delta village of Mi Abu al Kawm to a family of 13 children. He and Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin negotiated the historic Camp David Accords with President Jimmy Carter . Both Begin and Sadat shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize Sadat courageously gambled everything for peace and called his dedication to Middle East peace his "sacred mission." "He who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change reality, and will never, therefore, make any progress," Sadat explained. With Sadat's statesmanship, Egypt became the first Arab state to recognize Israel's right to exist. "There can be hope only for a society which acts as one big family, not as many separate ones," he said. There is an old Arabic Proverb that says, "Trust in Allah, but tie your camel." In embracing Israel, Sadat outraged the Arab world. At a Cairo military parade in, while looking up at air force jets overhead, he was assassinated by Islamic fundamentalists within his own army. Z Mohamed Anwar El- Sadat Late President Mohamed Anwar El- Sadat - born in December 25, 1918 - assumed the Presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1970 upon the death of President Gamal Abdul Naser. He was a seasoned state's man; one we should not forget. Sadat's Presidency witnessed significant political events on national, regional and international arenas. Politically, the man managed to effect significant changes; in May 1971 Egypt had its first permanent constitution since the 1952 July Revolution, which restored to the country pluralism and the multi-party system ushured in 1976 bringing about more political and social freedoms. On the economic plane, Sadat laid the foundations of Openness to the world and the shift from centralized to market economy. He also managed to reopen the Suez Canal to international navigation in 1975. During his term of office, Egypt launched a liberation war to restore its territories from Israel in 1973. It was that military victory which restored to the Arab Nation its self confidence . The triumph paved the road to regional peace ,the first disengagement agreement between Egypt and Israel was implemented in 1974 and the second in 1975. President Sadat made his most valiant move in 1977 when he paid the historic visit to Jerusalem; paving the way for Egyptian-Israeli negotiations which culminated in the Camp David framework for peace in the Middle East in 1978 followed by the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty by the virtue of which Israel withdrew from Sinai .The two countries then established diplomatic relations in 1982.
