Sabatier, Paul French chemist. He found in 1897 that if a mixture of ethylene and hydrogen was passed over a column of heated nickel, the ethylene changed into ethane. Further work revealed that nickel could be used to catalyse numerous chemical reactions. Nobel prize 1912. Sabatier later explored the use of oxide catalysts, such as manganese oxide, silica, and alumina. Different catalysts often gave different products from the same starting material. Alumina, for example, produced olefins (alkenes) with primary alcohols, which yielded aldehydes with a copper catalyst.

Sabatier, Paul La carrière de Paul Sabatier est jalonnée de titres honorifiques: prix Lacaze en 1897, prix Jecker en 1905, prix Nobel en 1912. En 1913, il est le premier membre "non résidant" I (c'est-à-dire ne demeurant pas à Paris) à être élu à l'Académie des Sciences. Ajoutons enfin que, désireux de contribuer à l'essor de Toulouse et d'y développer une grande Université, il a refusé à plusieurs reprises les offres qui lui étaient faites de postes dans la capitale, notamment après les morts de Moissan et de Berthelot, et cela même après que le prix Nobel fut venu lui apporter une notoriété intemationale. L'ensemble de ses travaux peut se classer en deux grandes parties. La première partie commence avec son travail de thèse, "recherches thermiques sur les sulfures", et se poursuit jusqu'en 1890. Il met au point des méthodes de préparation des dérivés du soufre (sulfures, sulfhydrates, persulfure d'hydrogène, hyposulfures de bore et de silicium). Réalisées au laboratoire de M. Berthelot, ces études, menées d'un point de vue chimico-physique, comportent de nombreux calculs et des mesures thermodynamiques. Il s'attaque ensuite aux composés séléniés (encore moins bien connus) et à la cinétique des réactions, en étudiant plus spécialement les transformations de l'acide métaphosphorique. Les conséquences de cette découverte sont innombrables. Le benzène est saturé en cyclohexane en présence du nickel à 180'C. On transforme par cette méthode les dérivés nitrés en amines, les aldéhydes et cétones en alcools primaires et secondaires, l'oxyde et le dioxyde de carbone en méthane, etc. Cette dernière réaction permet de traiter le gaz à l'eau et le gaz de houille pour augmenter leur pouvoir calorifique tout en supprimant leur toxicité. Mais si cette technique est largement appliquée en Suisse et en Allemagne, elle l'est bien peu en France!
