Organic chemist who shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1912 with Victor Grignard for researches in catalytic organic synthesis, and particularly for discovering the use of nickel as a catalyst in hydrogenation (the addition of hydrogen to molecules of carbon compounds).
Sabatier studied at the Ecole Normale Superieure and under P.E. Marcellin Berthelot at the College de France, taking his doctor's degree in 1880. After a year at the University of Bordeaux, he moved to the University of Toulouse in 1882, where he became professor (1884) and dean (1905) and where he remained until retirement in 1930. Sabatier's various discoveries formed the bases of the margarine, oil hydrogenation, and synthetic methanol industries, as well as of numerous laboratory syntheses. He explored nearly the whole field of catalytic syntheses in organic chemistry, personally investigating several hundred hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions, showing that several other metals besides nickel possess catalytic activity, though in smaller degree. He also studied catalytic hydration and dehydration, examining both the feasibility of specific reactions and the general activity of the various catalysts.

9. Paul Sabatier - Biography
paul sabatier – Biography. paul sabatier was born at Carcassonne in Southern France on November 5, 1854. paul sabatier was a very reserved man.
http://www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1912/sabatier-bio.html
Paul Sabatier
Sabatier took charge of courses in physics in the Faculty of Sciences at Bordeaux until January, 1882, when he accepted a similar post at the University of Toulouse. He additionally became responsible for courses in chemistry in 1883 and was elected Professor of Chemistry in 1884, a post which he retained until his retirement in 1930. He became Dean of the Faculty of Science in 1905 and continued to lecture after his retirement until his death in 1941. He was ever faithful to Toulouse and turned down many offers of attractive positions elsewhere, notably the succession to Moissan at the Sorbonne in 1908.
Sabatier's earliest researches concerned the thermochemistry of sulphur and metallic sulphates, the subject for his thesis leading to his doctorate, and, in Toulouse, he continued his physico-chemical investigations to sulphides, chlorides, chromates and copper compounds. He also studied the oxides of nitrogen and nitrosodisulphonic acid and its salts and carried out fundamental research on partition coefficients and absorption spectra.
When he started his investigations into the phenomenon of catalysis, Sabatier soon pointed out anomalies in Faraday's physical theory and he in turn formulated his chemical theory which postulated the formation of unstable intermediaries. His subsequent painstaking work and discovery of the use of finely-divided metal hydrogenation catalysts subsequently formed the bases of the margarine, oil hydrogenation, and synthetic methanol industries. He demonstrated the selectivity of catalytic action and also the selectivity of catalysts to poisons, as well as introducing the use of supports and showing the resultant enhanced activity. He also made a close study of catalytic hydration and dehydration, examining carefully the feasibility of specific reactions and the general activity of various catalysts.

Nobel Lecture, December 11, 1912
The Method of Direct Hydrogenation by Catalysis
I find it most moving to be speaking to you within these precincts, immortalized as they are by so many glories, and I should find it difficult to overcome my emotion if I were not aware of the kindness with which the Royal Swedish Academy welcomes those whom it has judged worthy of its world-famous rewards. I have to talk to you on the general method of direct hydrogenation by catalysis , which I established some dozen years ago in collaboration with Senderens and which I have continued to develop and generalize with the assistance of my devoted pupils, Mailhe and Murat. I have already on several occasions - in publications and lectures - given a detailed description of how this method is used in practice and I shall not inflict upon you an exhaustive technical account of the procedures, or the long list of the wide variety of processes which can be carried out with it. I prefer to describe how I came upon this new method, what its principal applications are at the present time and how its intimate mechanism can be explained theoretically. I The earlier methods of hydrogenation were almost all based on the use of what is known as nascent hydrogen , i.e. chemical systems which, when used alone, in the absence of a reducible substance, release hydrogen as well as heat energy. In the presence of transformable substances such systems will transmit to them a portion of the hydrogen supplied.
