Sherwood Rowland, Donald Bren Research Professor of Chemistry and Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine gave the University Research Lecture on June 12, 2002. His lecture, "Why is Our Atmosphere Changing?" centered on global science and the environmental policies it will take to maintain the atmosphere of our planet in the next century. Professor Rowland is a native of Delaware, Ohio, and earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 with Mario Molina and Paul Crutzen for their work in atmospheric chemistry, particularly concerning the formation and decomposition of ozone in the stratosphere.
