Francis Peyton Rous discovers a virus that can cause cancer in chickens. In 1909, a farmer brought Rous a hen that had a breast tumor. Rous performed an autopsy, extracted tumor cells and injected them into other hens, which subsequently developed tumors. This is the first experimental proof of an infectious etiologic agent of cancer. Rous is awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1966.
Paul Ehrlich announces the discovery of an effective cure (Salvarsan) for syphilis, the first specific chemotherapeutic agent for a bacterial disease. Ehrlich was seeking an arsenic derivative and finally the 606th compound worked. He brought news of the treatment to London, where Alexander Fleming became one of the few physicians to administer it.

Albert Jan Kluyver and Hendrick Jean Louis Donker propose a universal model for metabolic events in cells based on a transfer of hydrogen atoms. The model applies to aerobic and anaerobic organisms.

I RETROVIRUS
Fig. VII. 2 - Retrovirus : virus dell’HIV in sezione.

Weird science versus revolutionary science
While it's true that at least 99% of fringe science announcements are just as bogus as they seem, we cannot dismiss every one of them without any investigation. If we do, then we'll certainly take our place among the ranks of scoffers who dismissed (or even blocked) a large number of major scientific discoveries through history. Beware! Many apparantly-sane discoveries such as powered flight and drifting continents appear normal and acceptable to us only because we have such powerful HINDsight. These same advancements seemed obviously wrong during the times they were first discovered.
In science, pursuing revolutionary advancements can be like searching for diamonds hidden in sewage. It's a shame that the realms of questionable ideas contain "diamonds" of great value. It makes judging crazy theories much more difficult. If crazy discoveries were *always* bogus, then we'd have good reason to automatically reject them. However, since the "diamonds" exist, we must never automatically discard ideas and observations which seem appear to be part of the "sewage." Sometimes the "obvious" craziness turns out to be a genuine cutting edge discovery.
When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him.

80. USRF - Charles B. Huggins, M.D. (1901-1997)
In 1966, Dr. Huggins received the Nobel Prize (shared with virologist peyton rous)for his research on the relationship between hormones and prostate cancer.
http://www.usrf.org/news/010308-huggins.html
Charles B. Huggins, M.D.
Nobel Prize winner Charles Brenton Huggins, M.D., the William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center, died at his Hyde Park home on January 12, 1997. The last survivor of the original eight faculty members of the medical school, Dr. Huggins was 95 years old. A plaque in his office, posted above his desk, carried his motto: "Discovery is our business." The death was reported by his daughter Emily Huggins Fine. Dr. Huggins' research on prostate cancer changed forever the way scientists regarded the behavior of all cancer cells and for the first time brought hope to the prospect of treating advanced cancers. By showing that cancer cells were not autonomous and self perpetuating, as previously believed, but were dependent on chemical signals such as hormones to grow and survive, and that depriving cancer cells of those signals could restore the health of patients with widespread metastases, Dr. Huggins provided an immense stimulus to research on cancer chemotherapy. He also founded the renowned Ben May Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago. He trained and inspired the lives of numerous medical scientists. And he became the leading urologist of his day, bringing a new level of scientific curiosity and inquiry to a neglected surgical specialty. Dr. Huggins was a pioneer in understanding the physiology and biochemistry of the male urogenital tract and was able to extend his findings from this field into many other areas.
