Rotblat, Joseph
Rotblat, Joseph (b. Nov. 4, 1908, Warsaw, Pol., Russian Empire [now in Poland]), Polish-born British physicist who became a leading critic of nuclear weaponry. He was a founding member (1957), secretary-general (1957-73), and president (from 1988) of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs , a London-based worldwide organization of scholars that seeks solutions to problems of national development and international security. In 1995 Rotblat and his organization were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for their longtime promotion of nuclear disarmament, most notably by sponsoring discussions between scientists from the United States and the Soviet Union. (see also Pugwash Conference Rotblat was educated in Warsaw at the Free University of Poland (M.A., 1932) and at the University of Warsaw (Ph.D., 1938). In 1939 he won a fellowship to the University of Liverpool, England, with which he was associated until 1949. In 1944 he moved to the United States to work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, N.M., but quit the project and returned to Britain that same year after learning that Nazi Germany would not build a competing atomic bomb. After the war he shifted the focus of his research to medical physics. In 1950 he became a professor of physics at St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College at the University of London.

Pugwash Conference
Pugwash Conference arms control The chief concern of Pugwash was to bring together leading scholars from many countries to discuss ways of reducing armaments and tempering the arms race. During the Cold War it was one of the few lines of open communication between the United States and the Soviet Union. Another purpose was to examine the social responsibility of scientists toward such world problems as economic development, population growth, and environmental destruction. The conferences are sponsored by the Pugwash organization, which consists of national Pugwash groups under the guidance of a president, a secretary-general, and an elected council based in London. During the years after its founding, the Pugwash organization issued a number of reports on problems of arms control and disarmament. Its spokesmen credited these reports with having helped to prepare the way for the major international treaties limiting the development and testing of nuclear weapons. In 1995 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to the Pugwash organization and to Joseph Rotblat Pugwash founding member, secretary-general (1957-73), and president (from 1988). (see also

In 1939 he started working at the University of Liverpool on the feasibility of the atom bomb with James Chadwick, whom he followed to Los Alamos to take part in the Manhattan Project. In November 1944, when it was confirmed that Nazi Germany would never manage to build the bomb, Rotblat immediately returned to England, the only scientist to quit the Manhattan Project before its devastating conclusion. In 1946 he co-founded the Atomic Scientists Association and in 1947 he organized "Atom Train," the first big exhibition on peaceful uses and against military applications of nuclear energy. Rotblat obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool in 1950 and his D.Sc. from the University of London in 1953; from 1945 to 1949 he was Director of Research in Nuclear Physics at the University of Liverpool. INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR JOSEPH ROTBLAT (Preliminary chat) INTERVIEWER: Professor Rotblat, first of all can I ask you what your role was in the development of the original atomic bomb? INT: And what happened at Los Alamos? How long were you there before you rethought what was going on? INT: A lot of other very well-known scientists at the time, such as Taylor, Oppenheimer, all the people that were talked of, didn't feel the same way. Did you have any discussions with them about what was going on? INT: So do you think that there's almost a dichotomy for scientists between the morals of what they're doing and the pure science of what they're trying to achieve?

Without being trite, is it true to say then that specifically during the Fifties, and then into the Sixties, when all the tests were going on in the Pacific and in Nevada, and the Russians started testing, it had almost become... I'm thinking of tcompetition that existed at that period between the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories in Alamos - it almost became a game to see who could get the bigger bang done. INT: Excellent answer. Can I take you back a bit then, sir, to 1954, when the first test that really became public knowledge, that became... not public knowledge... (Overlap)... the Bravo test, I was thinking of. Can you tell me a little bit about what you knew of it and what your reaction was to that? INT: So... could you tell me a bit about how you became involved, and how Bertrand Russell originally became involved?

Hiroshima and Nagasaki: H-bomb legacy still threatens world security
By Joseph Rotblat
On this 57th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we have to look reality in its ugly face. The drive for the elimination of nuclear weapons is going very badly, and the use of these weapons may become a routine part of military strategy, according to President Bush's recently disclosed Nuclear Posture Review.
Bush's readiness to use nuclear weapons is but an egregious expression of the nuclear deterrence policy that has been pursued covertly by the United States ever since, or even before, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The scientists in the United Kingdom who initiated the research myself among them were humanitarian scientists. The thought of working on a weapon of mass destruction would have been abhorrent to us in normal circumstances. But the circumstances were not normal: We knew that a war was imminent, a war between democracy and the worst type of totalitarianism. We were afraid that if the bomb were developed in Germany, it would enable Adolf Hitler to win the war and impose on the world the evil Nazi regime.
We thought that the only way to prevent this from happening would be for us the Western Allies also to have the bomb and threaten its use in retaliation.

Letter to the Editor
From Professor Sir Joseph Rotblat, FRS The Times, 15 September 2001 Sir, In the agonizing analysis of Tuesday's tragic events, two points need to be stressed germane to future dangers. One is the complete disregard by the perpetrators for human life, as evidenced by the choice of targets and the timing of the attacks on New York. The second is that the terrorists are a powerful organization with huge financial, manpower, and very likely technological resources. This means that much more devastating attacks cannot be excluded. One such attack could be by the use of a biological weapon, and there are plenty of them in the world. But far worse would be the use of a nuclear device. I would not be surprised if a group like Bin Laden's had managed to acquire such a device and had already smuggled it into a city in the USA, or, indeed, in the UK. Try to imagine devastation ten, or even a hundred, times greater than we saw on Tuesday. The mind boggles. But this is a real threat. Urgent measures need to be taken to lessen the probability of this occurring, namely by reducing the availability of the materials necessary to nuclear weapons - highly-enriched uranium and plutonium.

The Nuclear Threat is Real Address to the
3rd World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates
Rome, Italy, 19-20 October 2002
Joseph Rotblat

We are in the midst of the crisis over Iraq now aggravated by the terrorist attack in Bali. The US government is determined to bring about the downfall of Saddam Hussein, and to achieve this by military means, with or without UN approval. In justification of this policy, we are told that there is a real threat of nuclear weapons being used by Saddam Hussein. When I chose for my paper the title "The Nuclear Threat is Real," I did not have in mind the threat from Iraq. What I did have in mind was the threat from the United States: I had in mind the aggressive policy pursued by a team of hardliners, who have gained power in the Bush administration and are determined to ensure US supremacy in every field, including the nuclear one. I am highly critical of this policy, but I want to make it clear that my criticism is not of the American people. I am sure that they are genuine in their quest for peace. With the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Jimmy Carter, of the 89 individual Peace Laureates, 19 are from the United States. In a recent public opinion poll, 76% of Americans were in favour of banning nuclear weapons.

Joseph Rotblat
By Melissa Eileen Kane One might be surprised to find the numerous crusaders for peace in a century torn with war and destruction. The heroes of the last century are not the great military leaders or the political leaders who marched us into war, but those who averted conflict and strove for world peace. In particular, those who strove for the end of the nuclear arms race can be commended. These heroes are often found in the scientists who helped create nuclear weapons. My 20th Century peace hero is Dr. Joseph Rotblat, winner of the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize. Rotblat does not accept the end of the Cold War as a final victory for his crusade. He warns that we should not see this victory as the end of the nuclear age. He persists that though the end of the arms race is a great victory, the nuclear problem has not been solved. Rotblat insists that we each have a duty to ensure the continuance of human life and enrichment. When I think of peace heroes, I admittedly think of the obvious choices, Mother Theresa, Mahatma Ghandi, the Dalai Lama, but when I read the list of Nobel Laureates, I discovered many heroes, nearly forgotten by the masses. Joseph Rotblat is not a household name, and hardly mentioned in any history text. However, Rotblat is a prime candidate for all that he has received. There is no better Nobel Laureate than a man who will not accept mere nuclear deterrence, but only disarmament, peaceful solutions, and positive uses of nuclear power. His crusade is inspiring to those who seek comfort and security in the future which holds only uncertainly and hope.

THE QUEST FOR GLOBAL PEACE
Joseph Rotblat
It is a peculiar experience for me to speak in Los Alamos after nearly 60 years.  It is not a feeling of déjà vu , because in my first sojourn here there was no public to address; everything was under military regime and top secret.  Nor do I have a feeling of nostalgia, because – except for the beautiful scenery – I was very unhappy working on the Manhattan Project, and I escaped from it as soon as the situation justified it.  I find this experience peculiar because of the topic of my talk “The Quest for Global Peace”.  I am sure that all of us desire global peace, but while I believe that global peace demands the elimination of nuclear weapons, much of the basic philosophy of the establishment here is that global peace requires the existence of nuclear weapons.  I hope that I can persuade you to my point of view. My emphasis is on global peace, because peace is indivisible; you cannot have peace in one part of the globe while war is raging in another part; just as the tragic episodes of 11 th September have reminded us that “No man is an island”, that no country can isolate itself from all the others.  We live in a world of an ever-increasing interdependence of all its inhabitants and this is making us all like one family.  Globalization – whether in its positive or negative aspects – has brought about a situation whereby events in any part of the globe affect us all: in economic, cultural, societal, or political issues.
