Ramanujan, Srinivasa (1887-1920)
Ramanujan, Srinivasa 1 Ramanujan took ill while visiting England and died soon after returning home to India. Fellow mathematician J.E. Littlewood recounts a conversation with him: I remember once going to see him when he was lying ill at Putney. I had ridden in taxicab number 1729, and remarked that the number seemed to me rather a dull one, and that I hoped it was not an unfavorable omen. "No," he replied, "it is a very interesting number; it is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways."

Revenge
Revenge 1 A successful business man flew to Vegas for the weekend to gamble. He lost the shirt off his back, and had nothing left but a quarter and the 2nd half of his round trip ticket home if he could just get to the airport he could get himself home. So, he went out to the front of the casino where there was a cab waiting. He got in and explained his situation to the cabbie. He promised to send the driver money from home, he offered him his credit card numbers, his driver license number, his address, etc, but to no avail. The cabbie said "If you don't have fifteen dollars, get the hell out of my cab!!" So, the business man was forced to hitch hike to the airport and was barely in time to catch his flight. One year later, the business man, having worked long and hard to regain his financial success, returned to Vegas and this time he won big. Feeling pretty good about himself, he went out to the front of the casino to get a cab ride back to the airport. Well, who should he see out there at the end of a long line of cabs, but his old buddy who had refused to give him a ride when he was down on his luck. The business man thought for a moment about how he could make the guy pay for his lack of charity, and he hit on a plan.

Elihu Root on the Formation of the General Staff System in 1903 [Excerpted from Elihu Root, The Military and Colonial Policy of the United States: Addresses and Reports (Harvard University Press, 1916), pp. 417-440] THE GENERAL STAFF STATEMENT BEFORE THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON MILITARY AFFAIRS, WASHINGTON, DECEMBER 13, 1902 MR. CHAIRMAN and gentlemen, this bill covers but a single subject, and has but a single purpose. It is the establishment of a general staff corps, to be composed of officers detailed from the army at large, under such rules as may be prescribed by the President. The duties of the proposed general staff corps are described in the bill as follows: To prepare plans for the national defense and for the mobilization of the military forces in time of war; to investigate and report upon all questions affecting the efficiency of the army and its state of preparation for military operations; to render professional aid and assistance to the Secretary of War and to general officers and other superior commanders, and to act as their agents in informing and coordinating the acts of all the different officers engaged in carrying out their orders, and to perform such other duties as may be from time to time prescribed by the President. The bill provides that the general staff corps shall consist of one chief of staff of the army, with the rank, pay, and allowances of a lieutenant-general, one major-general, one brigadier-general, who, while so serving, shall have the rank, pay, and allowances of the grade to which detailed, all of these three to be detailed by the President from the officers of the army at large.

Elihu Root on the Beginning of a New Militia System [Excerpted from Elihu Root, The Military and Colonial Policy of the United States: Addresses and Reports (Harvard University Press, 1916), pp. 441-479] MILITIA AND VOLUNTEERS Extract from the Report of the Secretary of War for 1901 THE present provisions of law relating to the militia, and to the raising of volunteer forces, are quite imperfect and unsatisfactory. The militia law stands today virtually as it was enacted in 1792, and is practically obsolete. It is very desirable that Congress should now exercise the power conferred upon it by the Constitution to provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining the militia. The organization and armament of the National Guards of the several states, which are treated as militia in the appropriations made by Congress, should be made the same as those provided by Congress for the regular and volunteer forces. The relations of the National Guard organizations to the national forces, and the obligations and duties of those organizations in time of war, should be clearly defined, so that the confusion and distress regarding their action which accompanied the outbreak of the war with Spain may not again occur. I recommend that the President be authorized to convene boards of officers (including the General Service and Staff College Board) for the examination of officers of the National Guard, and other citizens who may apply to be examined, as to their qualifications to hold volunteer commissions; that the persons passing such examinations shall receive certificates, stating the office for which they are found to be qualified, and upon the calling out of a volunteer force shall be entitled to receive commissions for such offices.

Elihu Root – Nobel Lecture
Nobel Lecture
Towards Making Peace Permanent
Root begins with a lengthy articulationwhich is interesting if you're thinking of a career in international law. Otherwise, move on to the section dealing with international affairs, most broadly defined .] The humanitarian purpose of Alfred Nobel in establishing the peace prize which bears his name was doubtless not merely to reward those who should promote peace among nations, but to stimulate thought upon the means and methods best adapted, under the changing conditions of future years, to approach and ultimately attain the end he so much desired. The apparent simplicity of the subject is misleading. Recognition of the horrors of war and the blessings of peace, acceptance of the dogma "War is wrong and to keep the peace a duty", are so universal that upon the surface it seems only necessary to state a few incontrovertible truths and to press them upon the attention of mankind, in order to have war end and peace reign perpetually.
