Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Gallery Home Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Angie Dickinson Angie Dickinson was born Angeline Brown in the small farming community of Kulm, North Dakota. She was one of three daughters of Leo and Frederica Brown, and grew up around the sights and sounds of her family's weekly newspaper offices in the 1930s. Her family owned and operated the Kulm Messenger and later, the Edgeley Mail.
Dickinson's family moved to California when she was ten years old, but her time in North Dakota gave her the grounding she needed to take a shot at stardom. She took her prairie work ethic to the aircraft industry and worked in a parts plant to finance acting lessons. A talent scout spotted her in a beauty contest and so began the career of Dickinson. Her first big break came when Howard Hawks cast her opposite John Wayne in "Rio Bravo."
Dickinson has appeared on the big screen with such Hollywood notables as Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, Roger Moore, Burt Reynolds, Peter Finch and Ronald Reagan. She has appeared in over 50 major movies and television productions, but is most known for her roles in "Police Woman" and "Dressed to Kill." Among her many accolades, Angie has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and her work in "Police Woman" earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Dramatic Series. Recipients Next

T.R. on the Grand Canyon Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was the colorful and dynamic personality who dominated the American political landscape from 1900 until World War I. He became the 26th president of the United States following the assassination of William McKinley in 1901. Roosevelt was the first conservationist President. He established the National Wildlife Refuge program, and was largely responsible for establishment of federal control and regulation over public lands of the West. He created many desert national parks and monuments, including Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Montezuma's Castle and Petrified Forest.
Early Years
Born into a wealthy New York City family on October 27, 1858, Roosevelt grew up a sickly child, suffering from asthma and bad eyesight. But as a young man, he devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. His promotion of the "strenuous life" was his lifelong preoccupation. He also developed an early interest in nature and animals. As this keen interest increased, he collected thousands of specimens for museums and scientific study. He was considered one of the leading field biologists of his day and was the author of many books and articles on natural history.

The Year 1981
After 444 days in captivity, 52 American hostages were released by Iran on the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president.
John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate President Reagan with a .22 handgun. The president quickly recovered from a wound to his left lung after surgery, but press secretary James Brady suffered severe brain damage. A secret service agent and Washington police officer were also shot. The federal minimum wage was raised to $3.35 per hour. President Reagan lifted a ban on commercial recycling of nuclear fuel, despite fears that the action could put weapons-grade plutonium in the hands of terrorists. The president authorized development of the neutron bomb.

Theodore Roosevelt
Conservation as the Guardian of Democracy
By Daniel Filler
The movement for the conservation of wildlife, and the larger movement for the conservation of all our natural resources, are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose, and method. As president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt made conservation a central policy issue of his administration. He created five National Parks, four Big Game Refuges, fifty-one National bird Reservations, and the National Forest Service. Roosevelt advocated for the sustainable use of the nation's natural resources, the protection and management of wild game, and the preservation of wild spaces. Considering America's landscape to be the source of American wealth and the American character, Roosevelt believed conservationism was a democratic movement necessary to maintain and to strengthen American democracy. Roosevelt recognised America's vast natural resources as the source of the country's economic wealth and subsequent political strength globally. The abundance of land, timber, waterways, and mineral deposits fueled the continuing expansion of American industry. In a speech addressed to a national conference on conservation held at the White House in 1908, Roosevelt stated, "Our position in the world has been attained by the extent and thoroughness of the control we have achieved over nature; but we are more, and not less, dependent upon what she furnishes than at any previous time of history." The United States had built its economic and political strength by exploiting the nation's natural resources; but Roosevelt, like other leading conservationists, no longer believed that these natural resources were infinite in their abundance.
