82. Bull Moose Years Of Theodore Roosevelt By Theodore Roosevelt Association
Information from the theodore roosevelt Association about TR's Bull Moose party.
http://www.theodoreroosevelt.org/life/bullmoose.htm
[use your BACK key to return to this page from various links!] Primaries in 1912 Women in the Progressive Party The Bull Moose years Who Won the Presidential Primaries in 1912? Who won the presidential primaries in 1912 ? First of all, there were of course both Democratic Party and Republican Party primaries. The results of the Democratic primaries were inconclusive. There was no clear mandate. The winner of the Republican primaries was without question former President Theodore Roosevelt, contesting the renomination of President William Howard Taft. Both TR and Taft were opposed by the militant reformer Senator Robert M. LaFollette of Wisconsin, who saw both of his opponents as too conservative. Theodore Roosevelt won in California, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, nine out of 12 primaries. Roosevelt's victories in the nine states were landslides , except in Maryland. "The voice of the people" was clear in the Republican primaries. But the voters were not allowed to "speak" in most states.

Roosevelt's Thoughts On Scouting "The movement is one for efficiency and patriotism. It does not try to make soldiers of Boy Scouts but to make boys who will turn out as men to be fine citizens and who will, if their country needs them, make better soldiers for having been Scouts.
No man is a good citizen unless he so acts as to show that he actually uses the Ten Commandments and translates the Golden Rule into his life conduct - and I don't mean by this in exceptional cases under spectacular circumstances, but I mean applying the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule in the ordinary affairs of every-day life. I hope the Boy Scouts will practice truth and square dealing and courage and honesty. The man who counts and the boy who counts are the man and boy who steadily endeavor to build up, to improve, to better living conditions everywhere and all about them.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT'S FAMILY IN THE GREAT WAR
by
EDWARD J. RENEHAN, JR.
The Patriarch Atop San Juan Ridge with the Rough Riders
How the Roosevelt Children Caught the Martial Spirit
Teddy Roosevelt's children grew up in the glow of Roosevelt's crowded hour. (In his father's office at the White House, 10-year-old Quentin Roosevelt brandished his father's sword from the Cuban campaign, shouting "Step up and see the i-d-e-n-t-i-c-a-l sword carried by Colonel Thee-a-dore Roos-evelt in the capture of San Juan Hill. See it! See it!" Swinging the sword through the air, the boy opened a cut on the cheek of his friend Charlie Taft, son of Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of War William Howard Taft.) All of the boys in their time tromped the grounds of Sagamore Hill and the White House, re enacting the battle at San Juan Ridge.
All the Roosevelt children most especially the sons either absorbed or inherited his reckless, all-or-nothing approach to hazards. As David McCullough reminds us with reference to the Roosevelts, the pediatric psychologist Margaret McPharland says attitudes are caught more than they are taught. With this in mind, we may say Theodore Roosevelt's sons most certainly caught both his attraction to warfare and his egalitarian ethic.

Roosevelt, Theodore Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858–January 6, 1919) was born in New York into one of the old Dutch families which had settled in America in the seventeenth century. At eighteen he entered Harvard College and spent four years there, dividing his time between books and sport and excelling at both. After leaving Harvard he studied in Germany for almost a year and then immediately entered politics. He was elected to the Assembly of New York State, holding office for three years and distinguishing himself as an ardent reformer.
In 1884, because of ill health and the death of his wife, Roosevelt abandoned his political work for some time. He invested part of the fortune he had inherited from his father in a cattle ranch in Wyoming, expecting to remain in the West for many years. He became a passionate hunter, especially of big game, and an ardent believer in the wild outdoor life which brought him health and strength. In 1886 Roosevelt returned to New York, married again, and once more plunged into politics. President Harrison, after his election in 1889, appointed Roosevelt as a member of the Civil Service Commission of which he later became president. This office he retained until 1895 when he undertook the direction of the Police Department of New York City. In 1897 he joined President McKinley's administration as assistant secretary of the Navy. While in this office he actively prepared for the Cuban War, which he saw was coming, and when it broke out in 1898, went to Cuba as lieutenant colonel of a regiment of volunteer cavalry, which he himself had raised among the hunters and cowboys of the West. He won great fame as leader of these «Rough-Riders», whose story he told in one of his most popular books.

The colorful North Dakota badlands provides the scenic backdrop to Theodore Roosevelt National Park which memorializes the 26th president for his enduring contributions to the conservation of our nation's resources. Theodore Roosevelt first came to Dakota Territory in September 1883 to hunt bison. Before returning home to New York, he became interested in the cattle business and established the Maltese Cross Ranch partnership. The next year he returned to the badlands and started a second open-range ranch, the Elkhorn. Theodore Roosevelt witnessed the decline in wildlife and saw the grasslands destroyed due to overgrazing. Today, this park memorializes Theodore Roosevelt's conservationist contributions.

McKinley
As president, Roosevelt became more liberal. He tackled business monopolies, initiated measures for the conservation of national resources, setting aside 190 million acres for national forests, coal and water reserves, and wildlife refuges. Other highlights of his domestic policy were the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, which established the Food and Drug Administration, and the Hepburn Act of 1906, which enhanced the powers of the Interstate Commerce Commission. In 1904, he announced the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine , to the effect that the USA assumed responsibility for intervening in Latin America when countries displayed chronic wrongdoing or impotence (the Monroe Doctrine declared that European intervention in Latin America would be regarded as a threat to the USA).
