Theodore Roosevelt
First as a popular writer, and later as President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt exercised a profound influence on the history of the American West, earning his place among the presidential giants portrayed on Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. Born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, Roosevelt grew up in a wealthy family long prominent in local civic affairs. He was sickly as a child, suffering especially from asthma, but he early devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. Graduating from Harvard in 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee and the next year was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he became a leader among the minority of Republicans who pressed for social reform through government regulation. He first headed West in , drawn to the Dakota Territory by reports that three years of systematic hunting had all but destroyed the once massive buffalo herd of the northern plains. Roosevelt was determined to add this symbol of the American West to his trophy collection before it became extinct, and despite punishing weather, he stayed in the field until he accomplished his goal. At the same time, Roosevelt became enamored of the western landscape and the strenuous outdoor life of the plains, and purchased two ranches in the Dakota Badlands before heading back east.

Theodore Roosevelt was more than just the 26th president of the United States. He was a writer, historian, explorer, big-game hunter, soldier, conservationist, ranchman and Nobel Peace Prize winner. It is not surprising that his philosophy of life was known as The Strenuous Life
Theodore was born into a wealthy and socially prominent New York family in 1858. Although blessed with a quick mind he was not blessed with a strong body. He suffered from life-threatening asthma attacks throughout his childhood. Spurred on by his father, Theodore began to build up his body by strenuous exercise, and by adulthood he had become a model of physical courage and toughness. This early example of his character was indicative of the way he lived the rest of his life. He did not back down in the face of adversity, and he continually displayed remarkable physical and moral courage.
Early Political Life
As a young man Roosevelt decided on a dual career; law and politics. At the time, New York politics was dominated by men involved in machine politics. These were not exactly the kind of people he had met at Harvard. Yet he persisted in getting to know and understand them, while at the same time attending Columbia Law School. Eventually he secured the friendship and patronage of an influential man named Joe Murray who was able to get him nominated as a 21st District State Republican Assemblyman. Together, with Murray's contacts and knowledge of machine politics and his own family and social connections, Roosevelt was able to easily win the election. He was 23 and in Albany.

Theodore Roosevelt
26th president of the United States (1901-09) and writer, explorer, and soldier, who expanded the powers of the presidency and of the federal government on the side of public interest in conflicts between big business and big labour. He also engaged the nation in affairs of Asia and Europe. He won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War, and he promoted the construction of the Panama Canal (1904-14). The early years.
Roosevelt was born into a moderately wealthy family of Dutch ancestry; his mother, Martha Bulloch of Georgia, was of Scots-Irish and Huguenot descent. He received an excellent education from private tutors and at Harvard College; he was one of the few presidents endowed with an encompassing intellectual curiosity. In 1880 he entered Columbia University Law School. But historical writing and politics soon lured him away from a legal career. During the same year he married Alice Hathaway Lee of Boston and after her death, in 1884, married Edith Kermit Carow, with whom he lived for the rest of his life at "Sagamore Hill," a mansion near Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y.
Roosevelt returned home just when Thomas C. Platt, the Republican boss of New York, was looking for a respectable candidate for governor. Platt distrusted him, but, upon Roosevelt's promise that he would not attack the machine, he was easily elected. An excellent governor, he removed several corrupt politicians from office and over Platt's opposition secured a corporation franchise tax and a civil service system. Enraged, Platt maneuvered Roosevelt into the 1900 nomination for vice president on the McKinley ticket and thus secured his elimination from state politics.

Born in New York City, Theodore Roosevelt spent the earlier part of his life battling asthma; once he conquered the disease, he passed the remainder of his days battling external foes, often conquering them as well. His greatest gift, among many, was his unerring ability to promote himself in the media. Despite his upper class upbringing and education at Harvard College, Roosevelt was always able to get along with men of any class and social background. He sought a political life in order to reform society and prevent what he perceived was the threat of revolution by the lower classes. His fearless work as president of New York City's Board of Police Commissioners caught the attention of political associates of William McKinley . After his election as President, McKinley appointed Roosevelt assistant secretary of the navy in 1897. Much to Navy Secretary Long's chagrin, Roosevelt would make policy himself particularly when the secretary was out lunching. One such case involved the appointment and supply of Admiral Dewey's Asiatic Squadron with orders that they head for Manila harbor.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
Theodore Roosevelt was the twenty-sixth president of the United States and Eleanor Roosevelt's uncle. He was also Franklin Roosevelt's fifth cousin and a political role model for both his younger relatives. FDR's political career followed the same trajectory as that of his famous Republican cousin, while Eleanor would embody and extend his progressive political values. So integral was TR's vision to his younger relatives that at least one historian has dubbed the twentieth century, "the Roosevelt century" in recognition of the trio's wide-ranging influence on American life and thought. As governor, TR supported many of the causes that ER would later champion, among them centralized, interventionist government, regulation of women's and children's labor, and taxes on utility and insurance interests. However, TR's progressive views did not endear him to conservative Republicans, who decided to sideline him by nominating him for vice-president in 1900. Their plan backfired when President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901 and TR replaced the fallen leader.

Roosevelt, the "Rough Rider" on horseback. Assistant Secretary of the Navy
In April of 1897 Roosevelt was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy as a reward for his staunch and tireless campaigning for the newly elected President, William McKinley . Theodore had been greatly affected the logic of Captain (later Rear Admiral) Alfred Thayer Mahan's "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History" since he had reviewed the book for the Atlantic Monthly in 1890. Now he could begin to put Mahan's beliefs into practice. Mahan had indicated that several key points concerning the Navy were revealed by studying the history of various countries and their Navies. First, that the United States ought to develop a strong Navy capable of extending its power across the ocean where it could defend U.S. interests at a safe distance from the home coastline. Neither Roosevelt or Mahan believed in the Isolationist view that the U.S. coastal defense was the sole use of the Navy. Also, if the Navy was going to be a world force, bases would have to be established at various locations, such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. The Secretary of the Navy, John D. Long, a former Governor of Massachusetts and Congressman, was an able administrator. He was not, however, interested in the details of Naval architecture, turret design, coal supplies, drydocks and the like. Long recognized Roosevelt's obvious love for these matters, and relied on Theodore to address them. Long did not share Roosevelt's views on Naval expansion and the need for new capital ships, and, in spite of badgering from Roosevelt, would not fight vigorously for these items.

A New York police captain While he is in the neighborhood the public can no more look the other way than the small boy can turn his head away from a circus parade followed by a steam calliope. James Gordon Bennett, Jr.
The Strenuous Life Theodore Roosevelt was not only a statesman but a cowboy, soldier, hunter, naturalist, and explorer. He advised everyone to lead "the strenuous life." While he was in the White House he rode horseback, played tennis, or took a rough cross-country walk daily. He often played tennis on the White House lawnhis companions became known as the "tennis cabinet." In his autobiography Roosevelt wrote that often they would make a "point to point" walk, not turning aside for anything. If their route took them through Rock Creek Park in Washington, they might have to swim Rock Creek and scale the steep walls of cliffs. They swam the creek in their clothes when ice was floating thick in it. A Devoted Father He entertained his 6 children and their many cousins and friends with equal energy. Their home, named Sagamore Hill, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, was a happy place for childrenthere were picnics and overnight camping trips, swimming and rowing in the Sound, and wonderful Christmas and Fourth of July celebrations. He was not always in favor with the mothers, however, because he let the children go swimming with their clothes on and he took them on hikes from which they returned dirty and ragged. He was never too busy to have breakfast with the children or for a story before they went to bed.
