the 1998 L. H. Thomas Lecturer Heinrich Rohrer Heinrich Rohrer was born on June 6, 1933 in Buchs (SG), Switzerland. He received his Ph.D. in experimental physics in 1960 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich with a thesis on superconductivity. After a two-year postdoctorate at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA, he joined IBM's Zurich Research Laboratory in 1963 as a Research Staff Member . His research interests included the transport properties of Kondo materials, phase diagrams of antiferromagnetics, multicritical phenomena, scanning tunneling microscopy, and, most recently, nanomechanics. He spent a sabbatical at the University of California in Santa Barbara, California, USA in 1974-75. For the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope, together with Gerd Binnig, he was co-recipient of the King Faisal Prize and the Hewlett Packard Europhysics Prize in 1984 and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986. In 1987, he was awarded the Cresson Medal of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, USA. The practical value of the invention was recognized by the induction to the US National InventorsÕ Hall of Fame in 1994. In addition he is a member of the US Academy of Sciences and a honorary member of various professional societies and academies throughout the world and has received honorary degrees from Rutgers University, University of Tsukuba in Japan, and Goethe University in Germany. Même si nous connaissions les besoins et les problèmes de la société dans vingt, cinquante ans ou plus, nous ne saurions pas aujourd'hui quelles réponses scientifiques leur apporter. Quoi qu'il en soit, nous ne les connaissons pas. De même que les besoins et les problèmes de demain seront fonction de l'évolution de la société, de même les réponses scientifiques seront fonction des progrès de la science. Les sciences d'hier ont posé les bases des sciences d'aujourd'hui, les sciences d'aujourd'hui jettent les bases des sciences de demain. Comme nous ne savons ni où, ni quand, ni comment aura lieu la prochaine découverte, nous n'avons pas le droit de renoncer à certaines expériences sous prétexte qu'elles pourraient donner lieu à des abus. La science a pour mission de servir l'homme et, comme telle, recèlera toujours le danger d'entraîner des abus et des perversions. Un instrument ne peut être ni bon, ni mauvais. Ces qualificatifs ne peuvent s'appliquer qu'à son usage. Si la société bâillonne la science par crainte d'elle-même, elle bâillonne aussi l'avenir de ses enfants.
