A Brief History of Curly Arrows The inventor of Curly Arrows is usually recognised to be Robert Robinson (1886-1975), winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1947. Robinson's main interests were in the study of the structures, properties, and synthesis of plant dyestuffs (anthocyanins), sex hormones, and alkaloids. His discoveries led to the successful production of synthetic antimalarial drugs, and he contributed towards the investigation of penicillin. He also took a great interest in fundamental questions concerning the mechanisms of organic chemical reactions. You can read more about him at the OU FECS , and UCL The first use of curly arrows to represent the movement of electrons is in a paper entitled An Explanation of the Property of Induced Polarity of Atoms and an Interpretation of the Theory of Partial Valences on an Electronic Basis , by William Ogilvy Kermack and Robert Robinson, published in the Journal of the Chemical Society Robinson had just recently come to adopt the then quite new idea , first proposed by G.N. Lewis

Holger ERDTMAN (1902-1989)
A brief biographical sketch by In 1945, Holger Erdtman was appointed to the professor of organic chemistry of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) where he, after his retirement in 1969, for many years remained active as an emeritus professor. Stockholm University Hans von Euler at the same university. The young man quickly made an important discovery. He identified the activation factor of bovine phosphatase. He later told of his disappointment in this discovery, because the activation factor was found to be Mg2+, not an organic compound! One may speculate what kind of career he would have had as a biochemist! As a young student, Holger Erdtman was already clear about his wishes to become an organic chemist and to study the chemistry of natural products. This important branch of chemistry was hardly represented in Sweden at that time. The subject of his thesis work was the chemistry of humic acids and other products derived from oxidative phenolic couplings. He went abroad for studies and research and the main part of his earlier research was done while he was a Ramsay-fellow with Professor

Within 10 years he was secretary at war and treasurer of the navy. When the Tories came to power in 1710 he lost his office. He became leader of the opposition in the Commons and a Tory target. He was convicted of graft in 1712 and sent to prison by the Tories, but was back in Parliament in 1713. His star began to rise again in 1714 after George I became king. Before becoming 'prime minister' in 1721, Walpole was first lord of the treasury in the government dominated by James Stanhope and Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland. While at that post, he introduced the first sinking fund (1717), but resigned his office shortly thereafter. He returned in 1720 as paymaster general and was first lord of the treasury for a second time in 1721 prior to becoming prime minister.
