Introduction
In 1990-1991, I studied for an M Phil degree in History and Philosophy of Science at Clare College, Cambridge - I had already graduated, in 1989, with a BA in Natural Sciences (I spent the 1989-90 academic year rather unhappily as Deputy President of Cambridge University Students Union). My intention then was to do some research on the Irish astronomical tradition of the nineteenth century, hopefully ending up with a dissertation on the subject. I was inspired to do this by a talk I had heard at the Cambridge Group for Irish Studies in early 1989 by Jim Bennett, who then became my M Phil supervisor. As it happened, this essay (one of four 3,000 word essays that I had to submit as part of the course - the others, on the transmission of science from the Greeks to the Arabs Richard of Wallingford and medieval timekeeping , are also on this site) was the closest I got to the nineteenth century Irish tradition at that point - for my main dissertation , I was sidetracked into the beautiful world of medieval astrology by the late Roger French (see my 1992 lecture which draws from the dissertation). Several years later I did write what I had wanted to on the Irish astronomers in general, and published it in the

ROBINSON, Henry Peach b. 9 July 1830; d. 21 February 1901 Henry Peach Robinson was a pioneer of pictorialist photography, earned the term "the King of photographic picture-making", and was certainly one of the greatest photographers of his time. He was very influential until the time of Peter Henry Emerson , who introduced naturalistic photography. He was greatly influenced by the paintings of J.M.W. Turner, and numerous references to him appear in his writings. At 19 he practised as an artist, and exhibited an oil painting at the Royal Academy of Art, in 1852. That same year he began taking photographs, and five years later decided to make a living out it, and opened a studio in Leamington Spa, selling portraits. He later established another studio in Kent.
The picture shown here is "Seascape at night", produced in 1870. In 1850 he was introduced to photography, being given instruction on the calotype process by Hugh Diamond , and he also learned how to use collodion . In fact, it was Diamond who most influenced his life and encouraged him to become proficient in photography.

Click to enlarge SIR ROBERT HODGSON WAS the fifteenth Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island since the creation of the Colony in 1763. Robert Hodgson was born at Charlottetown in 1798, the eldest son of Robert Hodgson, esquire, formerly Speaker of the Prince Edward Island Assembly and Rebecca, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Robinson of the South Carolina Royalist Regiment. He completed his education at King's College in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Hodgson studied law with Simon Bradstreet Robie and James W. Johnston in Halifax, Nova Scotia and was called to the bars in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in 1819. In 1827, he married Fanny Macdonald, daughter of the late Captain Ranald Macdonald of the Glengarry Light Infantry and Town Major of Charlottetown. Hodgson took residence in Charlottetown and took up an active career as a lawyer, land agent and politician. They had two sons and one daughter. Hodgson did not remarry after his wife died on 2nd May 1832. Sir Robert Hodgson was a longtime office seeker; in fact, his indefatigable quest for offices, honours, and pensions more than once betrayed a lack of taste. Nonetheless, he was undeniably a man of distinction in the history of Prince Edward Island. He was the first native Chief Justice, the first native Lieutenant Governor, and the first Islander to be knighted. When he died, the

Just at the midpoint of the 20th Century there were three important developments in stereochemistry . The first was signaled by Derek H.R. Barton 's paper "The Conformation of the Steroid Nucleus" ), which brought serious consideration of conformation of organic molecules to centerstage and ultimately led to Barton's Nobel Prize. The second was a paper (announced in 1949) by Johannes Martin Bijvoet (pronounced "buy foot" 1892-1980) a Dutch crystallographer. In " Determination of the Absolute Configuration of Optically Active Compounds by Means of X-Rays " Bijvoet reported that using a rubidium salt of (wouldn't you know) tartaric acid and a special property of the heavy Rb atom (called " anomalous dispersion ") he was able to do what no one had been able to do before - prove which enantiomer of a chiral compound was which. He showed that, given a 50:50 chance, Emil Fischer had guessed right when he drew the Fischer projection of tartaric acid 58 years earlier. From this time forward it would be possible to draw and name compounds according to their actual, or " absolute configuration , rather than their configuration relative to an arbitrary standard (like Fischer's D -glyceraldehyde).

Hamilton
By Sir Robert Stawell Ball
From Great Astronomers by Sir Robert Stawell Ball (Isbister, London, 1895, pp. 303-334.) WILLIAM ROWAN HAMILTON was born at midnight between the 3rd and 4th of August, 1805, at Dublin, in the house which was then 29, but subsequently 36, Dominick Street. His father, Archibald Hamilton, was a solicitor, and William was the fourth of a family of nine. With reference to his descent, it may be sufficient to notice that his ancestors appear to have been chiefly of gentle Irish families, but that his paternal grandmother was of Scottish birth [see note] . When he was about a year old, his father and mother decided to hand over the education of the child to his uncle, James Hamilton, a clergyman of Trim, in County Meath. James Hamilton's sister, Sydney, resided with him, and it was in their home that the days of William's childhood were passed. ``His reciting is astonishing, and his clear and accurate knowledge of geography is beyond belief; he even draws the countries with a pencil on paper, and will cut them out, though not perfectly accurate, yet so well that anybody knowing the countries could not mistake them; but you will think this nothing when I tell you that he reads Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.'' His somewhat discursive studies had, however, now to give place to a more definite course of reading in preparation for entrance to the University of Dublin. The tutor under whom he entered, Charles Boyton, was himself a distinguished man, but he frankly told the young William that he could be of little use to him as a tutor, for his pupil was quite as fit to be his tutor. Eliza Hamilton, by whom this is recorded, adds, ``But there is one thing which Boyton would promise to be to him, and that was a

Famous Chemists Web Site Here you can read life stories about famous powerful chemists!
Sir Robert Robinson (1886-1975)
British chemist, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1947 for his research on a wide range of organic compounds, notably alkaloids. After obtaining his doctorate from Victoria University of Manchester in 1910, Robinson taught at various British universities before being appointed to the Waynflete chair of chemistry at the University of Oxford in 1930, from which he retired in 1955. He was knighted in 1939. Robinson conducted research on the structure and synthesis of many different organic compounds. His early studies of plant pigments enabled him to synthesize anthocyanins and flavones, but his most important studies were undertaken on alkaloids; these are complex, naturally occurring, nitrogen-containing compounds that can have profound biochemical effects on living things. Robinson's efforts to determine the chemical reactions that form alkaloids in plants led him to discover the structures of morphine (1925) and strychnine (1946). He also formulated a qualitative electronic theory of the structure of organic molecules. His research played a role in the synthesis of penicillin and of certain antimalarial drugs as well. Robinson wrote over 500 papers and several books on natural products but in addition he was an avid chess player who wrote "The Art and Science of Chess: A Step-by-Step Approach".

L ieutenant Governors are appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister of Canada and the Federal Cabinet. The appointment is for a period of not less than five years and the salary is paid by the federal government.
T he complex list of leaders listed below is due to the consitutional changes to the region we now know as the Province of Prince Edward Island. On June 28, 1769, the St. John's Island separated from Nova Scotia and had governors. On February 1, 1799, it was renamed Prince Edward Island but continued to have governors. On July 1, 1873, it entered confederation as a province and began having lieutenant governors.
