PEEL, sir robert, BART. (17881850), English statesman, was born on the 5th of February 1788 at Chamber Hall, in the neighbourhood of Bury, Lancashire robinson. He died in London on the pth of May 1895, and was succeeded as 4th baronet by his son, sir robert Peel

SIR ROBERT PEEL
PEEL, SIR ROBERT, BART. In 1820 Peel married Julia, daughter of General Sir Johr Floyd, who bore him five sons and two daughters. The writers who have most severely censured Sir Robert Peel as a public man have dwelt on the virtues and happiness of his private and domestic life. He was not only a most loving husband ant father but a true and warm-hearted friend. In Whitehall Gardens or at Drayton Manor he gathered some of the mosi distinguished intellects of the day. He indulged in free anc cheerful talk, and sought the conversation of men of science; h~ took delight in art, and was a great collector of pictures; he wn fond of farming and agricultural improvements; he activel~ promoted useful works and the advancement of knowledge; h~ loved making his friends, dependants, tenants and neighbors happy. And, cold as he was in public, few men could be more bright and genial in private than Sir Robert Peel. While in office, Peel succeeded to the baronetcy, Drayton Manor and a great estate by the death of his father (May 3, 1830). The old man had lived to see his fondest hopes fulfilled in the greatness of his son; but he had also lived to see, that a father must not expect to fix his sons opinionsabove all, the opinions of such a son as Sir Robert Peel, and in such an age as that which followed the French Revolution. Those who wish to know more of him will consult his own posthumous Memoirs (f856), edited by his literary executors Earl Stanhope and Viscount Cardwell; his private correspondence, edited by C. S. Parker (1891-1899); the four volumes of his speeches; a sketch of his life and character by Sir Lawrence Peel (1860); an historical sketch by Lord Dalling (1874); Guizots Sir Robert Peel (1857); Knzels Leben und Reden Sir Robert Peels (1851); Disraelis Life of Lord George Bentinch (1858); Morleys Life of Cobden; monographs by F. Robinson, Sir Robert
English chemist, Nobel prizewinner 1947 for his research in organic chemistry on the structure of many natural products, including flower pigments and alkaloids. He formulated the electronic theory now used in organic chemistry.
Robinson's studies of the sex hormones, bile acids, and sterols were fundamental to the methods now used to investigate steroid compounds. His discovery that certain synthetic steroids could produce the same biological effects as the natural oestrogenic sex hormones paved the way for the contraceptive pill.
Robinson was born near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and studied at Manchester. He first became professor at Sydney, Australia, 1912, returning to the UK 1915 and ending his career at Oxford 1929-55.
Robinson studied their composition and synthesis of anthocyanins (red and blue plant pigments) and anthoxanthins (yellow and brown pigments), and related their structure to their colour.
In his research on alkaloids he worked out the structure of morphine in 1925 and by 1946 he had devised methods of synthesizing strychnine and brucine, which influenced all structural studies of natural compounds that contain nitrogen.

SIR ROBERT BALL
Robert Ball was of Irish extraction, but tracing the Ball lineage takes us back to 16th Century England; to Devon, where his ancestors were landowners, with estates in Mamhead near Dawlish and Morebath just north of Tiverton. Naturally some of his forefathers had military connections; including:
A great great great grandfather who was an officer in the 1680 army of Charles II. On the other side of the Atlantic, Bent Ball, a great uncle fought under William Howe as a captain in the 63rd regiment in the American War of Independence. Despite being severely wounded by 3 musket balls at the Battle of Bunker Hill, he lived on until he was 80, dying in 1832 and with one of the shots still inside him.
Coincidentally, two of the Ball lineage were astronomers in the late 17th century. They were brothers William and Peter. Ball only found out about these ancestors when he researched his family history much later in life.
Inevitably, there was a black sheep in the family, who went by the name of Nicholas Ball; his main claim to fame seems to have been his love of gambling. His epitaph read
Here lies Nick Ball
Who had a fall
From grandeur to decay
His fine estate
His gold and plate
All lost was in a day "Mamhead" the stake

Introduction
In 1990-1991, I studied for an M Phil degree in History and Philosophy of Science at Clare College, Cambridge - I had already graduated, in 1989, with a BA in Natural Sciences (I spent the 1989-90 academic year rather unhappily as Deputy President of Cambridge University Students Union). My intention then was to do some research on the Irish astronomical tradition of the nineteenth century, hopefully ending up with a dissertation on the subject. I was inspired to do this by a talk I had heard at the Cambridge Group for Irish Studies in early 1989 by Jim Bennett, who then became my M Phil supervisor. As it happened, this essay (one of four 3,000 word essays that I had to submit as part of the course - the others, on the transmission of science from the Greeks to the Arabs Richard of Wallingford and medieval timekeeping , are also on this site) was the closest I got to the nineteenth century Irish tradition at that point - for my main dissertation , I was sidetracked into the beautiful world of medieval astrology by the late Roger French (see my 1992 lecture which draws from the dissertation). Several years later I did write what I had wanted to on the Irish astronomers in general, and published it in the

Robert Robinson was born in September 1886 and was educated at Manchester University, coming to Magdalen College as Waynflete Professor of Chemistry in 1930; he remained in post until his retirement in 1955, when he became an Honorary Fellow. His Nobel Prize was awarded in 1947 for his work in organic chemistry. He was President of the Royal Society between 1945 and 1950. He died in February 1975. Robinson's first Chair was awarded him at the University of Sydney, New South Wales at the age of 26 and before arriving at Magdalen (where he was to remain for a quarter of a century) he had occupied four other chairs, in addition to a post in industry. Robinson made important contributions in three distinct and diverse areas of organic chemistry; in chemical theory, in the way that chemical processes occur in plants which are not reproducible in the laboratory and in the structure of natural products. He used to devise ingenious methods of chemical synthesis. He published over 500 papers. He was noted for intense energy and a restlessness of spirit. His Nobel medal is held in Magdalen College. more nobel laureates

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Sir Robert Robinson The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1947 Sir Robert Robinson was born at Rufford, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire on September 13, 1886, the son of William Bradbury Robinson , a surgical dressing manufacturer who invented his own machines for the production of lint, bandages, etc. , and the cardboard boxes for packaging them. He was educated at the Chesterfield Grammar School, Fulneck School, near Leeds, and at Manchester University where he graduated B. Sc. in 1906 and D. Sc. in 1910. Robinson's extensive researches in organic chemistry have dealt not only with the structure and synthesis of many organic bodies, but also with the electrochemical mechanism of organic reactions. His interest in the chemical constitution of plant dyestuffs soon extended to another group of vegetable bodies, the alkaloids, where the whole series of his researches are remarkable for their brilliant syntheses. He contributed greatly towards the definition of the arrangement of atoms within molecules of morphine, papaverine, narcotine, etc. These discoveries led to the successful production of certain antimalarial drugs scientific papers. In 1912 Sir Robert married Gertrude Maud Walsh, a fellow student at Manchester University. She died in 1954; they had one son and one daughter. In 1957, he married Stearn Sylvia Hillstrom of New York.
