At the University of Sydney in 1912, Sir Robert was chosen to be the first Professor of Pure and Applied Organic Chemistry. Most of his important researches focused on alkaloids and nitrogen containing compounds that can have superficial biochemical effects on living things. Sir Robert discovered the structures of morphine in 1925 and strychnine in 1946. His research mainly focused on the synthesis of penicillin and of certain antimalarial drugs as well. Reference Wilson, H.W. Nobel Prize Winners ; Wasson Tyler, H.W. Wilson Company: New York City, NY, 1987; 873-874. Sir Robert Robinson was the winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize in chemistry. He won for his work on alkaloids from plant products of biological importance. He lived form 1886 until 1975 in Great Britain. He studied at the Oxford University in England. (1) Robinson also did research with structure and synthesis, as well as elctrochemical mechanism in organic reactions. He contributed to the arrangement of molecules such as morphine, papaverine, and narcotine. This work led to anitmalarial drugs. (2)

    Robinson, Sir Robert
    (b. Sept. 13, 1886, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Eng.d. Feb. 8, 1975, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, near London), British chemist, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1947 for his research on a wide range of organic compounds, notably alkaloids. After obtaining his doctorate from Victoria University of Manchester in 1910, Robinson taught at various British universities before being appointed to the Waynflete chair of chemistry at the University of Oxford in 1930, from which he retired in 1955. He was knighted in 1939. Robinson conducted research on the structure and synthesis of many different organic compounds. His early studies of plant pigments enabled him to synthesize anthocyanins and flavones, but his most important studies were undertaken on alkaloids; these are complex, naturally occurring, nitrogen-containing compounds that can have profound biochemical effects on living things. Robinson's efforts to determine the chemical reactions that form alkaloids in plants led him to discover the structures of morphine (1925) and strychnine (1946). He also formulated a qualitative electronic theory of the structure of organic molecules. His research played a role in the synthesis of penicillin and of certain antimalarial drugs as well.
