4. Richard J. Roberts - Autobiography
richard J. roberts – Autobiography. I was born in 1943, the onlychild of John and Edna roberts (née Allsop) in Derby, England.
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1993/roberts-autobio.html
At this time I wanted to be a detective, where it seemed they paid you to solve puzzles. This changed quickly when I received a chemistry set as a present. I soon exhausted the experiments that came with the set and started reading about less mundane ones. More interesting apparatus like Bunsen burners, retorts, flasks and beakers were purchased. My father, ever supportive of my endeavors, arranged for the construction of a large chemistry cabinet complete with a formica top, drawers, cupboards and shelves. This was to be my pride and joy for many years. Through my father, I met a local pharmacist who became a source of chemicals that were not in the toy stores. I soon discovered fireworks and other concoctions. Luckily, I survived those years with no serious injuries or burns. I knew I had to be a chemist.
I am a passionate reader, having been tutored very early by my mother. I avidly devoured all books on chemistry that I could find. Formal chemistry at school seemed boring by comparison and my performance was routine. In contrast, I did spectacularly well in mathematics and sailed through classes and exams with ease. During these years at school I also discovered chess, which I loved, and billiards and snooker, which became a consuming passion. At age 15, I easily passed the O-level examinations and then began to specialize in the sciences taking Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. For exercise I discovered the sport of caving and would spend most weekends underground on the nearby Mendips.

    THE BATRAW FAMILY
THE ROBERTS FAMILY ... CONTACT ME Our French Canadian Heritage click here to play sound THIS SITE is dedicated to my parents, William Roberts, and Theresa Batraw, both of whom are of French Canadian heritage.
Both of their families came to upstate New York from Quebec, the Roberts family to Clinton county in the early 20th century, and the Batraw family to neighboring Franklin county in the mid 19th century.
The Roberts or more properly, the Robert family traces its
lineage to a French soldier of the Carignan Regiment, Louis Robert dit LaFontaine, who immigrated to Quebec City, New France, as part of a military deployment in 1666.
The Batraw (Bertrand) family can be traced to Jean and Marie Bertrand, who came to Quebec from France sometime after 1691. Records evidence the marriage of their son, Pierre Bertrand, to Marie Lemoine, May 23, 1714, in Montreal.
    Other surnames are as follows:
Barton, Batraw, Baxter, Bertrand, Brennan, Brooks, Chalupe, Gervais, Fountain, LaFountain, Monda, Mongeau, Ranger, Richard, Robert, Roberts, and Rondeau.

He pioneered the use of computers in the analysis of DNA sequences, and is one of the authors of the paper reporting the sequence of the human genome from Celera Genomics , the company that catalyzed the determination of the sequence far ahead of schedule. A longtime interest of Dr Roberts has been restriction enzymes, which are essential for genetic engineering, and which are a major product of his company, New England Biolabs . Marine Vignettes Ahoy Marine By Richard Roberts June 14, 1998 Joined the Corps in '43. Tarawa, Saipan with Weapons 2/8 (60mm mortars.) Landed on Tarawa at 7am, only one in the squad left. All I had was a mortar site and a satchel of ammo and no way to shoot it. They made me a Company runner then; runners were very common in those days. I lasted till 3pm, got 3 Jap .25 calibres in my leg. Was glad to see New Zealand again. Made it back to Division a few weeks later. Went on to Saipan, got a bad case of concussion there, lost my sense of balance, (and maybe some marbles too.) Was reassigned to the Engineers in time for Okinawa. Lost my front teeth there. Jap kicked me in the mouth with his hob-nailed boot just as I reached the top of a cliff. Actually, he did me a favor, I had a mild case of buck teeth. Made me a lot better looking, of course (grin). Made it to N. China from there. Had the time of my young life. Was discharged Feb. '46. My daughter tells me you had an uncle in the 2nd Marine division. I would like to contact your uncle if he is still with us, and find out what outfit he was with. My daughter has been encouraging me to write of my experiences. A little hard for me to do, but fun, never the less.
