Sa lvador Luria and Max Delbruck provide a statistical demonstration that inheritance in bacteria follows Darwinian principles. Particular mutants, such as viral resistance, occur randomly in bacterial populations, even in the absence of the virus. More importantly, they occur in small numbers in some populations and in large numbers in other cultures. The results, known as fluctuation analysis, show that resistance occurs before exposure to the phage and argues against the adaptation hypothesis of mutations. With Delbruck and Hershey, Luria is awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1969 Luria, S. E. and M. Delbruck. 1943. Mutations of bacteria from virus sensitivity to virus resistance. Pediatrician and Polio Pioneer
Today is the 83rd birthday of Frederick Chapman Robbins, an American pediatrician and virologist who played an important role in the development of the polio vaccine. After investigating viral epidemics for the U.S. Army during World War II, Robbins joined a research team at the Children's Hospital in Boston. In 1948, he found a way to grow viruses in the laboratory, using cultured cells in a nutrient solutiona discovery that made isolation and study of viruses much easier. By 1952, Robbins's group had successfully propagated the polio virus in mixtures of human embryonic skin and muscle cells. This culture system not only helped Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin produce polio vaccines, but also shed light on how poliomyelitis attacks the body. It suggested that the virus infects other tissues first before it invades the brain and spinal cord. Robbins and his colleagues John Enders and Thomas Weller received the 1954 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work. [Source: Britannica Online

78. Developments In Microbiology
Enders, virologist Thomas H. Weller and physician frederick chapman robbins develop a technique to grow polio virus in test tube cultures of human tissues.
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/hss2/hss/microbio/devts.html
Robert Koch publishes a paper on his work with anthrax, pointing explicitly to a bacterium as the cause of this disease. This validates the germ theory of disease. Albert Neisser identifies Neisseria gonorrhoeae , the pathogen that causes gonorrhea. He may be the first to attribute a chronic disease to a microbe. Paul Ehrlich refines the use of the dye methylene blue in bacteriological staining and uses it to stain the tubercle bacillus. He shows the dye binds to the bacterium and resists decoloration with an acid
alcohol wash. Robert Koch isolates the tubercule bacillus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis Theobald Smith and F.L. Kilbourne establish that ticks carry Babesia microti , which causes babesiosis in animals and humans. This is the first account of a zoonotic disease and also the foundation of all later work on the animal host and the arthropod vector. The organizing meeting of the Society of American Bacteriologists is held at Yale, December 28, 1899. The Society (later called the American Society for Microbiology) is the first independent organization devoted to the promotion and service of bacteriology in the United States. Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou develop the complement fixation test. They show that any antigen-antibody reaction leads to the binding of complement to the target antigen.
