C., U.S.A., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, and CERN, Geneva, Switzerland "for their pioneering work in the discovery of a heavy elementary particle of a new kind". Charm: The 4th Quark Burton Richter (SLAC) led the group that designed and built the Stanford Positron Electron Asymmetric Ring ( SPEAR ). Experiments at SPEAR in 1973 - 1974 looked at the rate of occurrence of events in which a colliding electron and positron annihilate, disappearing and producing other particles in the process. At certain energies, the rate seemed inexplicably large. Gerson Goldhaber, Martin Perl, and Burton Richter view an event display in the SPEAR (Mark I) counting room. On November 10, 1974, remeasurements in the problematic energy range confirmed a dramatic rate increase. Many further checks found that this peak is due to the production of particles containing a new kind of quark the charm quark.

Stanford Report, October 3, 2001 Burton Richter Burton Richter, the Paul Pigott Professor in the Physical Sciences at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center; at Stanford 1956-present. Awarded the 1976 Nobel Prize in physics with Samuel C. C. Ting "for their pioneering work in the discovery of a heavy elementary particle of a new kind." Since receiving the prize, Richter has pursued research and administration. From 1976 to 1982, he continued his research at SLAC, but extension of the work required a major advance in high-energy accelerators. Richter went into administration, serving as director of SLAC from 1984 to 1999, to turn that vision into what is now a reality. He has since returned to physics research, focusing mainly on neutrino physics, and science policy. He is the current president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. Richter, Burton I was born on 22 March 1931 in New York, the elder child of Abraham and Fanny Richter. In 1948 I entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, undecided between studies of chemistry and physics, but my first year convinced me that physics was more interesting to me. The most influential teacher in my undergraduate years was Professor Francis Friedman, who opened my eyes to the beauty of physics. In the summer following my junior year, I began work with Professor Francis Bitter in MIT's magnet laboratory. During that summer I had my introduction to the electron-positron system, working part-time with Professor Martin Deutsch, who was conducting his classical positronium experiments using a large magnet in Bitter's laboratory. Under Bitter's direction, I completed my senior thesis on the quadratic Zeeman effect in hydrogen. During my years at the synchrotron laboratory, I had become interested in the theory of quantum electrodynamics and had decided that what I would most like to do after completing my dissertation work was to probe the short-distance behavior of the electromagnetic interaction. So I sought a job at Stanford's High-Energy Physics Laboratory where there was a 700 MeV electron linear accelerator. My first experiment there, the study of electron-positron pairs by gamma-rays, established that quantum electrodynamics was correct to distances as small as about 10

Ve spolupráci s kolegou Davidem Ritsonem a s finanèní pomocí organizace "Atomic Energy Commission" v roce 1973 dokonèil stavbu elektron-pozitronového urychlovaèe SPEAR ve Stanfordu. V roce 1974 zde byl objeven kvark c ve vázaných stavech charmonia (cc'). Richter tuto èástici pracovnì nazval J. Èástici nalezla i skupina vedená S. Tingem na protonovém urychlovaèi v Brookhavenu v experimentech s fixovaným terèem. Stejnou èástici zde nazvali (objev vešel do dìjin jako listopadová J/ revoluce). Dnes se èástice nazývá J/psí. Jedná se o první z tìžkých, dlouho žijících mezonù obsahujících c kvark.
